Cyrus Powell's Grandchildren

Cyrus Powell had a son named Charles Talton.  These are his children by his second wife.  She is standing in the back row on the left.  She was Eldora Allen, but her mother was a Crane.  All in the family so to speak.

The Chorus

Astrid's Great Aunt

Maybe Astrid got her athletic ability from this lady!

Finches Here

The little Finches are busy!  This morning I saw more Martins so they are coming.  I was afraid for them as I had only been seeing a very few.

Sigrid's Big Day

Make my own birthday cake!  She did a good job.  She wanted flowers for the table.

Gigi got her legos and Pop gave her money to buy flowers for her garden.

She got new bedspread, pillows and hot pink curtains that give the room a pink glow!
Cousins came to help celebrate.  Pop gets to sit with  a pretty girl who loves him!

Greta is shy for about an hour and then she is our best friend.

Some of the pictures that Laura has in her living room.  See Mom and Dad?
This picture of the girls is neat!

Astrid made Sigrid a bow hanger.  Sigrid loves bows in her hair.
I see me from High School!
Grandparents watch over who enters the home of their children.

Birthday Cake For Sigrid

Sigrid will be 9 tomorrow.  She is making her own cake!  It is white cake with lemon filling!  Pop will love it as he loves lemon.  Happy Birthday, Sigrid.

Tommy Lou

This week I got to wondering about our cousin, Tommy Lou.  I found this death info about her husband. He died in 2010...but she is still kicking.  I thought Nik was interesting so I looked on Ancestry.  He came to the US at age 9.  His father died in a prison camp in Russia.  I guess he was in Hilter's army.  Nik's mom and four children came to the US after the War.  She had a brother in St. Louis.  Later Nik was at Columbia, MO in College.  He was a mental health worker!  Whatever that means. I enjoyed what I found...even Tommy Lou's signature!

Gold Finches Here

I have been having lots of birds at my feeders.  I love the Gold Finches.

Throw Back Thursday

I went today to a beautician that Larry's Mom knew.  She gave me a perm and the do is like one I wore 20 years ago.  I know this way out of style!  I really like it because my hair is limp and dull and it does better when I can get a perm.  The younger girls just do cuts and colors.  If they give you a perm, they "wad" it up and it frizzes.  I am glad to find Rhoda!  Helen, I should have smiled but forgot to.

My Girls' Trip

Sigrid is in the beer wagon!
Two older girls in the slammer!
 Ingrid hiding her new braces.
this may be a beer cellar.
Sigrid says "no bull" and Ingrid and Astrid have gained some weight on the  trip.

I guess Sigrid is a bird in a cage and Astrid is trying sumo wrestling!
 We miss our neighbors.

Clayton Working On Fine Motor Skills

Coloring works fine motor skills, especially when you stay within the lines.  I never like coloring that much but Larry loved it and he would lay in the floor with the girls and they would color.  His pictures always looked excellent.  Below Clayton is relaxing under his tiger blanket I made him.  He wrote me a thank you card all by himself.  I will take a picture one day and post it.

Price Matching

I went to Lowe's this morning with an ad from Home Depot!  I am afraid we are failing as educators today.  I am putting Phlox in one of my beds Larry made me. It is the one with the pretty Easter Lilies in it.  Home Depot had the 5.98 pots for 3 for 10 bucks.  I got 6.  The helper went with me to the checkout.  The check out lady was in her 40s or 50s and the garden department person was about 35.  They got me rang up and put the pots in at 10 each!  Whew.  Then I listened as they tried to figure out how much 3 for 10 was!  One tried to use her cell phone to divide 3 into 10.  Finally, she said well, I think it's 1.88 each and then said no, it is 2.98.  I did not say a word. Lord, forgive me.  I just marveled at how dumb we have become!  Laura can figure a sale!  If something is 40 percent off, she can tell you what the price is.  I know Erin can too.  No, wonder so many folks get cheated.  We can not even do simple math.  I wish I could drop my nines like my Grandpa Powell!  See even I am dumbed down!   No one can make change.  If they ring up your total, and you say, oh, I want to give you the 30 cents.  They are lost.  Everything is done on the machine.  Brains are dead!  I taught Erin to count back change.  I learned it when I was about 15!  I am glad my two girls can count.

David S.

In the 1980's Larry had a friend who had a gas and convenience station in Russellville.  One of the attendants was a man name Simmons.  He was retired from the Air Force and lived up hiway 7 above Dover.  The day after Christmas, he started killing his entire family.  He put the bodies in a hole he had had his kids dig for this purpose.  After he killed the family who lived at home, he waited for his other kids to come home for Christmas.  He killed them all including his grandchildren, one of whom he fathered.  Then he came down to Russellville.  He killed a young woman who I taught in school.  She was a cute, little gymnast named Kathleen.   Kathleen reported him for harassing her and the trucking company fired him.  So first, he went to kill her and he succeeded.  Then he went to David's station to kill him.  David paid him about minimum wage and he harbored feelings that he should receive much more.  A woman who worked for David made more than he did.  He surely wanted to kill her.  He came in shooting.  In the back of the station, David had some tables as he sold coffee and drinks.  Just little stuff.  Well, a few of the coffee drinkers were there and they threw coke bottles at Simmons and he finally ran out.  No one was killed at David's place.  It all soured David on the operation and he moved back to Texas.  We started wondering about him after the computer age came in.  David died in a car wreck.  All sort of sad.  But it just shows that you can find about anything you want to now days.  Larry and I were talking about David yesterday.  They bought a tractor on the halves and sold it.

Larry bought a tractor yesterday from a fellow whose Uncle owns Potter sausage.  Cecil said the J. C. asked his Dad if he wanted to go in on the business but Cecil's Dad said that will never go over.  Count me out!  Cecil met us at Mcalister, OK with the Cub and we loaded it at Atwood's.  Well, I sat in the truck.  We got there and back fine.  I enjoyed going.  We went through the Cherokee Nation, Creek Nation and down into the Choctaw Nation on the trip.  Now, Larry has a good little tractor he will sell.  The U S government tried to sneak one in on the Indians...giving them the mostly desert OK for the good land in MS, GA, AL and TN.  Well, the Lord looks after the down trodden and there was oil under a lot of these lands!

Siggie is gone to the St. Louis zoo for her birthday.  We are tending the dog until she returns.   I hope she gets to see lots of stuff and the family travels safely!

Cyrus Powell's Homestead

Cyrus Powell (Henry's brother) lived in this house.  Matilda lived a long life here and someone took this picture.  At one time, it was probably a nice homestead!  I was at least 24 by 18 or so or maybe even 20 by 24.  Their place was near Philadelphia, MO.  Cyrus lived until 1898 and Matilda until 1903.  That is why a picture of their home survived.
This is Delbert and Cyrus Powell.    Cyrus is a grandson of the elder Cyrus, but I am not sure about Delbert.  He may be a great grandson!

Soccer

We went up to watch Clayton kick that soccer ball!

Yippity Skippity

Look who is terrific!  Erin said Clayton why did you get this award?  Clayton said--"it is because I sang really well".   Just goes to show what I was saying, a five year old does not always see things the way we do.  I thought until I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade the entire object of the class work was to get through first.  I really tried hard to get it done before anyone else.  Even when we got the papers back and maybe I missed some, if I got my paper up to the teacher's desk first, I thought I did fabulous.  So Clayton got this award for singing so goooooooooood!  Keep on singing Clayton!

Another Old One

This is Winnie's picture...I guess this is Richard, Clayton and Winnie.  I am wondering if this is Daddy's dog or Grandma and Grandpa Powell's dog.

Still At It

I am still doing the LR paper's crossword M-Saturday.  I don't mess with it on Sunday.  Today I did the entire thing without a hitch.  It usually takes an hour.  I am not that smart, but I can learn.  I tried to do the crossword when Erin was born.  I could not hardly get any of the clues.  I decided then that I was going to acquire this skill.  I do think it is a skill.   It is supposed to help keep my mind alert, but it may not be working!

Clayton Meets A Bear

I am reading a book about President Wilson.  He did not learn to read until he was 9 years old.  Clayton is 5 and he can already read well.  The above story says Clayton soll (saw) a big ber (bear) and he galld (growled) at me!  I also love the illustration.  Clayton either has a flat top or hat and the bear has big claws and a big belly hole!

Received An Onus

This lady is a great granddaughter of Cyrus Powell.  She spent her life researching her Powell--Crane lines.  Yesterday, I found a box on the front porch left by UPS.  Hazel's daughter sent me her Mother's two Powell books that she had compiled over her lifetime.  Hazel died in 2003 and her daughter is a year or so older than Patsy.  I was not really happy to receive this gracious gift as I thought who will I give them to when I am gone.  Well, I have decided I need a will and I am going to will the two books to my Sister Helen!  Helen they are full of pictures of dead people.

I know...

why they called Daddy, Cotton!  On Winnie's site it says the back four kids are Grandma's so that is
Fleta, Thelma, Truman and Dad
The front 3 are their cousins so I guess it is Oma's 3 girls?  Notice the buggy in the background.
