It was about 1975 and Larry was working at a feed store in
Russellville. The owner was a
staunch Republican. Who comes walking down South Knoxville? Bill Clinton! He was
walkin', and alone, no car in sight. Up the steps to the old feed mill he came with a bounce in every step. It was hot weather and he was
sweatin'. He had a suit on but the coat was slung over his shoulder and his tie was loosed. He was
sloppin' wet with sweat. He shook Larry's hand and asked for his vote for Attorney General of Arkansas...then back through the swinging little door to the smoke filled office of the Republican he went and asked for his vote as well. Larry said you could read Jack's mind as he eyed Bill Clinton over his reading glasses. It was a look of--young man you will never go anywhere. Well, Larry decided he had his vote and he watched as Bill left the way he came walking down Knoxville. He went over to an old car wash and asked the old crippled man who was cleaning for his vote and then across the street to a used car lot and then to a box factory. Larry watched as he headed back toward downtown
Russellville--where he probably had left his old car parked and made a circle asking for votes. Larry had no idea that he had shook the hand of a President that day!
