Four Fouls

The Gobs got another win.  They topped Siloam Springs 28-20.  Greta had four fouls by 3rd quarter.  Referees weren’t great Erin said.  I say it’s hard to get someone to run for an hour with folks screaming at you.

It’s cold today.  If we can survive a few more days a warm up is coming.  Lots of rain too.  January is almost over and spring is edging closer!  Days are longer.

Gulls Walking on Ice

Walked today and I was amazed at the gulls walking on frozen at Lake Dardanelle!  They  are probably Ring-billed Gulls!   They wouldn’t let me get very near!  But they were really pretty.

Ring-billed gulls nest in colonies on the ground, or sometimes in trees near lakes. They often nest near other water birds. The male and female work together to build the nest out of twigs, sticks, grasses, leaves, lichens and mosses. The female lays three eggs.

Return to Normal

Laura and I got our steps in!  I had to be careful in icy spots.  One fall could end it all for this old lady! ❄️❄️

Cold, Cold Heart

Bradley Cove Road in front of my house yesterday.  Snow was packed.  Laura sent me this.  I haven’t ventured out in a vehicle.
I’m dressed like Second Lady when I go out in snow and cold.
This morning it was 4 degrees here. I’m sure Sister Fleta and Erin were much colder.  Erin said she will work some today.  Wishing all safe traveling.  Laura texted me to be ready to go walk about 2 PM.  Will be above freezing.  She and Eric still have no school. Sigrid starts ATU today virtual.  I hope she does well again this semester.  Ingie hasn’t had to drive to Baptist in Little Rock yet but I’m sure she’ll be back at it tomorrow.   Astrid drove I 40 yesterday to work at Clarksville and today she works in Conway.  I’m sure she left early.  Hope she is safely there.

I don’t have to get out so I haven’t.  I try to be extra careful when I feed and water the birds and chickens.  Phinnie won’t go out unless I go too.  His hair is falling out in handfuls.  I think his shedding means spring is just around the bend.  Helen reminds me when we talk that I said I was happy for cooler weather and I have what I wished for.

How We See Things

When a winter storm comes, I fret.  What if my heat goes out?  Water freezes and pipes burst?  One of my kinfolk has an accident traveling the snowy road!  It’s all useless thinking.  I see the glass going empty.  Others see the same glass still almost full.  Ada’s excitement about the wonders of the world is the exact opposite to my dread of it.  She jumped with joy when she saw the white that covered her yard.  She had hot chocolate in the morning and snow ice cream later.  I’m sure she wrapped up and went out and played in the snow.

Snow Dog

Phinnie and I went out and took food and water to the chickens and birds.  He tasted the snow.  You don’t shovel the sidewalk in this snow.  Just sweep the snow away.  I swept my porches and walks.  We did see the sun peeking from the clouds.  Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure, He is a shield to them that put their trust in Him.

As I lumbered through the snow, I thought of the phrase—pure as the driven snow.  It means being completely pure, clean, and free from any wrongdoing like God’s Word.  It dates to the early 1600’s and Shakespeare’s plays.  Young folks today would probably think of “driven snow” as dirty—covered with car and truck tracks, but in the 1600’s, it referred to being blow into a drift and untrodden.

O snow, which sinks so light,

Brown earth is hid from sight,

O soul, be thou as white

Be thou as white as snow

Colder Today

Yesterday was a stay inside and stare out the window kind of a day.  Astrid let Piper have a spa day.  Piper has painted nails!  I studied two red birds.  It’s 15 here this morning. Hoping the sun will shine even in this chill.

My son in law Eric brought me my fav—plain raised doughnut—for breakfast.  I’m living the good life.

Did you carry water and help chop wood growing up?  Fleta, Helen and I did.  If we had a supply of stove wood, we still gathered kindling each night for Momma to start the fire with!  We never had boots.  We put our shoes on the stove board to dry out!  Momma got up early and started the fire.  Dad was up early too, but she was better at fire starting.  There were cows to milk and animals to tend to.  I can’t say I’d like to go back to those “good ole days” like many say.

At 1:00 PM it started snowing.  It’s not supposed to be above freezing til Wednesday.  My backyard after it started.

Erin sent this photo.  Her snow started before ours.  I will say—I don’t like this weather at all.

Ice Walker

I had on six layer.  My clothes were so heavy it was like carrying weights.

We walked today because even though it was cold compared to what’s to come it wasn’t impossible.  I thought about how ice and fire are similar.  I wouldn’t want to die in either.  Fire often represents desire and ice hatred. Fire and ice both act as means of destruction. Both degrade humans at an internal level. Their effect at the start might be invisible but in the long term, they can cause visible

Til the Storm Passes

Well, the Gobs beat Van Buren.  VB didn’t have a YouTube channel.  But Erin sent a few videos.  Two of Greta’s  teammates got technicals for pushing on purpose.  She said they’d all be running line drills today as punishment.  That’s what being a team is all about.  Not me, we !

Last night we had thunderstorms and hail.  Lots of golf ball size hail.  Wind howled.  I missed Larry.  Anytime there was any type of storm, he stayed up.  He’d say “go on to bed.  I’m staying up til the storm passes by”.  I went right to sleep always.  Phinnie has more angst than I do.  We’re a pitiful pair.  It was 53 at 5 this morning and now it’s 33.  Going to get even colder.  Misery loves company!

More Beanies

I crocheted more beanie and ear warmers.  Astrid is taking them to clients where she works.  They’ll come in handy next week when the chill arrives.

Find a Hobby

I have several hobbies.  I bird watch, crochet, walk, read, solve puzzles, grow my family tree.  I have 68,000 people in my tree.  I am 6th cousins with some removes to Tiffany Trump!  I work DNA puzzles for people trying to find a parent.

I learned to crochet when I was in my 20’s.  I continue this hobby.  It’s very relaxing and rewarding.  Laura learned to crochet less than a year.  I tried to teach her when she was younger, but her friend Amy is a better teacher than I am.   Recently, she made several ear warmers.  She’s created a Christmas vest.  Today she came by before school wearing this sweater she crocheted.

I hope you have some hobbies.

Gob Gob

Oh, happy day.  I can’t drive at night but the Gobs are on YouTube and I can watch Greta.  They beat Alma. Squeaked by 30-28.  Greta is number 24.  She is a strong player and will get even better.  Proud I got to watch her. I’d had a heart attack if I’d been there in  person!
