Deep Freeze

Laura's family made it home late last evening.  They came by and got their 3 dogs.  I am on the laptop and saw these pictures of Asti and Phoebe when she first came to live on Galla Creek!   Phoebe was totally upset that Astrid left her, but I never mentioned it as there was nothing to do about it and I did not want Astrid to worry.   I know Phoebe was overjoyed to be with her mistress again.  I guess it was about midnight when they got here.
This week I have read a book by Bette Davis' assistant about  her time with Bette.  It read fast and I was not surprised by much.  Kathryn Sermak was her personal assistant for about 20 years.  Bette left half her estate to Katheryn.

I am not surprised when I read about actresses and find they were not nice people, but I enjoyed reading of her life never the less.  What I will remember from the book is how to cook a Bette Davis egg.   She had one each morning and Kathryn had to fix it after becoming her hire.  Boil water in a pot.  Kath used an electric kettle when they were in a hotel room.  Bring it to a full boil.  Place one egg in the kettle and turn it off.  If a pan is used, it must be one with a lid.  Bette had Kathryn leave her egg 3 minutes.  Then Kath was to pour out the water and replace it with cold water for one minute.  They cut the egg in half and ate it out of the shell.  I peeled mine and placed it on dry toast.  Three minutes was not enough for me.  Egg was what I call raw!  Next morn, I tried 5 minutes--still under cooked.  Seven minutes was perfect for me.  I have had this several mornings and then had my oatmeal for lunch.

To enjoy a Bette Davis egg, one has to like a poached egg.   I love them.  Daddy liked a poached egg too.  I want the white completely cooked and the yellow about half cooked.  Seven minutes makes a perfect egg for me!  I peel it after the minute in the cold water and place it on my dry toast.  It is very delicious!  Thank you, Bette Davis!

More Moab

During the period between 1829 and the early 1850's, the area around what is now Moab served as the Colorado River crossing along the Old Spanish Trail. Latter-day Saint settlers attempted to establish a trading fort at the river crossing called the Elk Mountain Mission in April 1855 to trade with travelers attempting to cross the river. Forty men were called on this mission. There were repeated Indian attacks, including one on September 23, 1855, in which James Hunt, companion to Peter Stubbs, was shot and killed by a Native American.  After this last attack, the fort was abandoned. A new round of settlers established a permanent settlement in 1878.  Moab was incorporated as a town on December 20, 1902.

The inhabitants of Moab have wanted to change their name.  It has evil implications.   You can see from the pictures Astrid sent me why it was named after the old land of Moab.  Moabites and Ammonites  are descendants of Lot thorough an incestuous relationship with his oldest and youngest daughters occurring after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.   The Bible tells us the land of Moab is located east of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea, and south of the Arnon (Num. 21:10-15). Today, Moab is within the Kingdom of Jordan.

Inheritance of Moab
Deuteronomy 2:8-9  So we went on, away from our brethren the sons of Esau who live in Se'ir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and E'zion-ge'ber. "And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab. 9 And the LORD said to me, `Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession.'

Moses buried in the land of Moab
Deuteronomy 34:5-6  So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD, 6 and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-pe'or; but no man knows the place of his burial to this day.
Laura said even Ingie has had a good time in Moab.
 The view is breath taking.

Who dat on the point?  Astrid of course!
Coming home tomorrow!  Be glad to have them back in our backyard!

Merry Christmas

We celebrated Christmas yesterday at Laura's.  Thanksgiving is at Erin's.  We had finger foods.  I love Laura's Christmas cookies.
Laura's bunch is on their way to Moab, Utah for 5 days.  We have their dogs to keep us company.
The pumpkin roll is so good with coffee.
Laura has a beautiful tree.  She has most of my old ornaments because she had a tree way before Erin.  She hangs Aunt Betty's eggs high!
Clayton goes straight for the desserts.  He takes after Gigi.
Logan and Astrid!  Logan is very nice.  Pop and I both like him.  Down to earth and works everyday.
 Greta and her cousin's stockings.
 Sisters....
 Eric--a jewel!
Greg--pure gold!  He had worked all night.
Pop gets a hug for each gift of cash.

No one had to beg Clayton to hug Pop.

Grandchild number 5 or 1 whichever way you look at it.

Erin got the girl's selfie lights!  Ingrid liked the gift.
Erin gifted a gag gift to Pop.  It is a baby book for a CAT.  He hates cats.  She really got him some house shoes which he loved.  He fell hook line and sinker for the cat baby book.  He kept mumbling--I hate cats.

After Erin went home the girls came over for the gifts Pop made them.  Sig got a bedside table that can be used for a small desk--solid oak.  Ingrid got a record player stand with a shelf for records, and Astrid got a desk that raises to be used as an easel.   They love their special made gifts.  Pop cried but Ingie sat on his lap and helped him get over it.
Larry's two brothers are coming today to have dinner.  We are having chicken and dressing.  Hope it will be good.

Merry Christmas--another one gone by.  I have spent 47 Christmases with Larry!  He got me a sewing machine.  I have to get it out and learn to use it.  I got him a band saw.

Love all my family and friends.  Jesus was born in the summer--but oh well.  Back in history some folks did not know the date they were born.  If they knew it was winter, most chose December 25 as the day to celebrate their birth!
