Lois Rudd's Banana Muffins

 Sweet Jonell sent me her Aunt Lois' Banana Bread recipe.  Jonell makes muffins from it.  It is as good as Jonell said.
3 ripe bananas smashed
1 cup sugar (I used 3/4s cup)
1/2 cup of vegetable oil (I used healthy coconut oil)
scant teaspoon baking soda
3 Tablespoons Sour Cream (Jonell thinks this is the secret ingredient)
2 eggs
1 t. cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg (spices make me sick so I left this out and added Tspoon of vanilla)
1/2 cup of chopped nuts (I used pecans as that is what I had)
then add a 1 1/2 cup to 2 cups of self rising flour (enough to make thick and I added about a half cup of quick cook oats first and then used the flour until mixture was thick)
for muffins bake at 350 degrees for 22 minutes (this amount of time was perfect)
made 18 muffins for me the size you see below!

Sunday

 Gilbert worked on the storage shed and it looks better and stronger.
 Sigrid has her bluebird house ready to enter into the county fair.
 Astrid did a pencil drawering of Pop and Old Belle Starr.  She framed and matted it and then came over and hung it while he was away.  He was really surprised and pleased.
 I went out and visited with Uncle Walter this week.  He is 81.  He and Aunt Helen are doing well.  I enjoyed seeing them!
The first two years Larry and I were married we spent most Sundays at Uncle Walter's and Aunt Helen's.  Oh course, I did not wear a dress but Aunt Helen would get one of hers and off we went.  Uncle Walter and Larry were always working on something.  Helen went to the East Point Baptist Church there near where they lived.  They live where she was born.  Walter bought the farm from the other children.  Walter is Larry's Mom's brother.  He was 15 when Larry was born.  As far as I know, they have never had a cross word.  When Larry was about 4, Uncle Walter got him a tricycle for Christmas. He always calls Larry on his birthday.
 I have a herd of okra eaters living next door and only get about 3 pods of okra every 4 or 5 days. What nasty neigbors they are.

August Fading Fast

I made rolls and they were good.  I did not want to have more than one pan and it turned out to be one pan.
 Sigrid called her Pop..."I have an idea.  How about WE build a birdhouse and I enter it in the Fair (coming soon)."  Pop informed her that if they were building it she were going to do more than "sit on the stool".  Well, they built it and and she is decorating it.  It has a license plate roof, a pencil perch, and will have keys and buttons making flowers surrounding it.  Sigrid had read that first place gets a $100.00.
 Only brother came to Momma's house and worked all day making window repairs, ceiling repairs, shed repairs.  Momma would be thrilled.  Helen is thrilled!  Some of the windows were just about to fall out of the window space.  House was built about 1949 so it is old.

Little Sister

Helen said the PET scan made her really sick.  I think of how she is always doing for everyone else.  Fleta went up to check on her and she was worried about how JRs Emmie would get home from her volleyball game.

Hope tomorrow is a better Helen!

Osage Orange

 Clayton discovered this today.  I know he was thrilled with it.  He loves to explore outside.  Here he looks for feathers or rocks or frogs.

Facts and Myths of Hedge Apples
by Dr. Barbara Ogg, Extension Educator

This time of year, hedge apples - the fruit from the Osage-orange tree - are being sold at farmer's markets, garden centers, and other locations. Many people have heard that these fruits can be used as an insect repellent, but the truth is that many people don't know much else about this unusual tree and its fruit.

The Tree and Its Fruit:

Osage-Orange Tree is a small to medium-sized tree, having a short trunk and a rounded or irregular crown. The twigs are buff to orange-brown and are armed with one-half inch long spines. The stems exude a milky sap when cut. The Osage-orange is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are produced on separate trees. The small, green flowers appear in May or June. Female trees produce 3-to 5-inch diameter fruit which ripen in September or October and fall to the ground.

Native Habitat and Current Distribution:

The Osage-orange is native to a small area in eastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, and southwestern Arkansas. This region is the home of the Osage Indians which gives the tree its common name. Settlers found that the Osage-orange transplanted easily, tolerated poor soils, extreme heat, and strong winds and had no serious insect or disease problems. It was widely planted in the Midwest as a living fence because, when pruned into a hedge, it provided an impenetrable barrier to livestock. The development of barbed wire curtailed its widespread planting, but many Osage-orange trees can still be found in fence rows.

Osage-orange fence post - Click on Image for Larger viewUses of the Osage-Orange:

The wood is extremely hard, heavy, durable and shrinks or swells little compared to the wood of other trees. The wood is used for fence posts, treenails, furniture, and archery bows. In fact, many archers consider the wood of the Osage-orange to be the world's finest wood for bows. Another common name for this tree, bodark, is from the French bios d'arc meaning "bow wood." This tree also produces a bright yellow dye which can be extracted from the wood.

The fruit of the Osage-orange is a nuisance in the home landscape and has little value. Hedge apples are not an important source of food for wildlife as most birds and animals find the fruit unpalatable. The thorny trees do provide nesting and cover for wildlife.

The belief about the use of hedge apples for insect control is widespread and persistent. it is claimed that placing hedge apples around the foundation or inside the basement will repel or control insects. A few years ago, Iowa State University toxicologists extracted compounds from hedge apples. When concentrated, these compounds were found to repel insects.

Scientists also found that natural concentrations of these compounds in the fruit were too low to be an effective repellent. So, don't be fooled into spending much to use hedge apples as an insect repellent.

If you decide to pick hedge apples to check out the repellency yourself or to use the fruit as a fall decoration, it would be wise to wear gloves. The milky juice present in the stems and fruit of the Osage-orange can irritate the skin.

Astrid took this selfie of herself and her friend, Jennifer.
 This is a weed by the way side going to Sigrid's house.  My mail box is over there and when I walked to get the mail I snapped this with my camera.  It is as pretty as a flower.

Helen, pray for the Lord to put a bit in my mouth a bridle my tongue.  Woe to anyone who judges another!

In The Shelter of Your Arms!

 I am reading Harper Lee's old book that she had locked up for over 50 years because she did not think it was very good.  Whether good or not, I am going to finish it.
Below Ingrid is being introduced as a Drill teamer and Astrid as a cross country runner at the Cyclone Appreciation night.

 I like this picture of Clayton and Greta that Erin put side by side.  You can see how much they have grown in a year.  The little girl next door to them was telling Clayton about her real mom and Clayton asked what her "fake" mom did!  It made me think of "in the shelter of your arms"  that is where Erin has Clayton and Greta!

Traditions

 Laura always makes homemade cinnamon rolls for the girls to have the first day of school.  She brought Pop and I one for our breakfast too.  They were really delicous.
Laura made lanyards for Astrid and herself to wear with their IDs and keys.  Good way not to lose your keys or id as it is always around your neck.

Today AT ACH

 Clayton's appointment at ACH went well today.  He will have a little surgery in November. It will be outpatient.
 This is the view from the Clinic we were  at today.  Same view when Erin and I were there in 1983.  I think her room was on 3rd floor.  We only had one car good enough to drive to Little Rock so I stayed there with no car.  I did not need to leave anyway.  There was a big window in her room (private) and a heavy vinyl curtain covering it.  I would buy a cartoon of milk and place it next to the window behind the curtain. It would stay cold.  I had milk and coffee.  I think that was all I consumed.

After Clayton saw Dr. Patel we went to the Old State House.  I really enjoyed it.

Reverse 16

Happy Birthday, little Sister!  I know you are not 16 but I got the numbers right.  The back of this picture says "Mother".  So I think it was Grandma Gaddys.  I tried to fix Fleta's neck scar but the program was dead.  Look what good care we took of you even in 1954!

Praying Mantis

 Astrid made the wall hanging above for Laura's friend at school who makes coffee and shares with her neighbor teachers.  It will look great hanging near the community coffee!  Laura did not start drinking coffee until a few years ago, but she enjoys a good cup in the morning now!  You will have to turn your head to view the picture as my Sister Patsy is no longer here to fix my pictures.
Sigrid took this picture of a praying mantis.  She is holding it on her hand.  The word mantis comes from the Greek mantikos, for soothsayer or prophet. Indeed, these insects do look spiritual and mysterious, especially when their forelegs are clasped together as if they're in prayer.

School Days 2015

 Laura sent this of the three neighbors before school this morning. Astrid drove to High School!  Ingrid is in Jr. High and Sigrid is at the big 5th Grade Complex.  Sigrid's school is connected to her Dad's and she will feel very safe.
Here Clayton and Greta are ready to go.  Greta goes to a pre school at Woodlawn Heights where Clayton is in 2nd grade.  Erin and Greg have to pay just like day care for her to attend, but she and Clayton are at the same location by doing this.  Clayton has grown taller and Greta has too.  I can tell she looks very slender here.  Her friend Emory has switched and will be at her school this year.  I am glad because they are really great friends.

Christ Receives The Sinful Man

We drove to Elmwood Baptist Church today and visited at Erin's Church.  She was baptisted and declared aloud her faith.  Baptism does not remove sin, but is a symbol of rebirth.  The little Church in on Aunt Thelma's road.  That is what I always call that hiway!  Below are two of Erin's blessings!

We enjoyed the sermon.  It was about Manessah, King of Judah, 700 years before Christ came.  Manessah was the son of Hezikiah.  He became King at 12 and reigned for 55 years.  He was a vile and corrupt man.  He practiced all the things that God hates...and yet he repented and our loving God forgave him of all his sin!  Praise His name.
This song was sang today...I will always remember it with the greatest of fondness.  I cried as Erin came out of the water and looked to my right to see Larry doing the same.  It blessed our souls to see that Erin had found a home where they do not singjust  the 7 lines repeated songs and still have a piano player!  I am not saying anything is wrong with the 7 line praise songs.  They just don't touch my heart as the hymns I recall from old do!  Christ Receiveth Sinful Men was written in 1718 I think I read by a German and was translated to English.

Christ Receiveth Sinful Men
Words by Erdmann Neumeister
Luke 15:2
"And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying,
This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them."

Sinners Jesus will receive;
Sound this word of grace to all
Who the heav'nly pathway leave,
All who linger, all who fall.

Chorus
Sing it o'er and o'er again;
Christ receiveth sinful men;
Make the message clear and plain:
Christ receiveth sinful men.

Come, and He will give you rest;
Trust Him, for His Word is plain;
He will take the sinfulest;
Christ receiveth sinful men.

Chorus
Sing it o'er and o'er again;
Christ receiveth sinful men;
Make the message clear and plain:
Christ receiveth sinful men.

Now my heart condemns me not,
Pure before the law I stand;
He who cleansed me from all spot,
Satisfied its last demand.

Chorus
Sing it o'er and o'er again;
Christ receiveth sinful men;
Make the message clear and plain:
Christ receiveth sinful men.

Christ receiveth sinful men,
Even me with all my sin;
Purged from every spot and stain,
Heav'n with Him I enter in.

Chorus
Sing it o'er and o'er again;
Christ receiveth sinful men;
Make the message clear and plain:
Christ receiveth sinful men.

School Days Coming Monday

 Astrid and Ingrid do a lot of extras at school.  Ingie is playing volleyball and on the dance team.  She has mostly ap classes too!  Ingrid loves to read and loves her friends.
 Notice both pictures have girls with red faces.  Maybe it is make up.  Greta will be in preschool again.  She is four and will not be five until October.
 Clayton will be in second grade!  He is tall.  He loves reading and learning about science and history. He loves legos.  He is smart and does really well in school.
 Astrid is going to run cross country this year.  High Schools run 5 ks.  She is a great athlete.  She is going to play soccer.  Astrid makes really good grades.  She is so artistic.  Her room is neat and orderly and she likes her life like that too.
 Sigrid is the baby here.  She is going to a new school.  Not one of the kids from her old school are in the class.  She will be fine, but I am nervous for her and will be glad when her first day is over.  Eric, Laura and I know her teacher well.  He is really a great teacher and we are so glad she is in his class.  She told me she had never any a man for a teacher.
I sure hope all 5 of my kids have a great first day and pray the teachers will be kind and engaging!  I am glad I am not going.  I am starting my fourth year of retirement.  Where has all that time gone!
