Movin’ Like a Barge

I’m easily fascinated!  Barges and trains are old ways of travel but so much more economical that big diesels!  I’m reading about the Butterfield stage!  Mail could travel from New York to San Francisco on the stage by 1850.  It made a stop at Potts Inn, Pottsville,  AR! A letter from Memphis to Ft Smith would arrive about the same as today when I drop it in my mailbox.  But across America it took 23 to 24 days! That Barge can haul an astonishing 1,500 to 1,750 short tons of dry cargo. That means a single barge has a carrying capacity equivalent to 60-70 semi trucks!

We are all in a hurry!  Well, except me, I move about like that barge😂

Pottsville Phil

Groundhog Phil lives in the drainage ditch in front of my house.  The wild cherries fell from the tree by my drive providing several good suppers for him.  I enjoyed watching him scurrying around eating.  Maybe in February I can spy him casting a shadow or not.  He’s really a good neighbor and causes me no harm.

Button Bush

Yesterday, I spied Buttonbushes by Galla lake. These blooms look like a pincushion made of creamy white flowers. It’s a favorite for bees and butterflies and a host plant for the hydrangea sphinx and titan sphinx moths.  It’s called buttonwillow, honey balls, and honey bells. Native Americans used buttonbush bark to treat a variety of digestive ailments.  The Buttonbush likes wet marshy soil and that’s why it grows near Galla watershed.  Reminds me of the COVID virus symbol.

Ingrid’s Friend

Ingrid has a new best friend.  His name is Weasley.  He’s half poodle and half Coton De Tulear.  I’d never heard of the second type but read about them and the sound like an easy nice pet.ingrid called him a Cotonpoo.  Internet said—These dogs are great fits for families. They are rarely aggressive and love to play. These traits, combined with their small size, making them perfect pets to have around if there are small children in the home.

Wild Senna

Bees and butterflies love wild American Senna.  It blooms in July and August when there aren’t as many blossoms for nectar.  The leaves remind me of a mimosa tree.  The plant is from the pea family and was extremely popular with natives as a medicine, but too much is poisonous. The Cherokee used an infusion of the plant for cramps, heart trouble, fever, and 'blacks' (hands and eye sockets turn black). I have never heard of “blacks”. They used the  boiled root juices specifically for children with high fevers. They made a poultice the roots for sores.  They also used a compound for pneumonia and fainting spells. The Iroquois use the plant as an intestinal worm remedy and a laxative.  What an amazing plant.

Put a Woman in Charge

This is called Pigeon Wing.  It is lavender with a darker vein and yellow center.  It is beautiful in nature. It’s also called Bluebell Vine, Blue Pea, Butterfly pea, Darwin Pea.  It’s native to the Indonesian Island of Ternate.

I have always liked Roseann Cash. I like this Kevin Moore, too.

Walking at Lake Dardanelle

Tried to burn my limbs but they were too green.  I’ll wait and try again.
Watching for a fish sandwich?
I like this picture of the Lake. You can see the old narrow channel and over it clouds and the top of Mount Nebo..  Reminded me of when Moses went up and looked at the land he would not enter.

Cotton Powell Breakfast

Thanks to Sister Helen, I had a Cotton Powell breakfast.  When tomatoes ripened, Dad wanted white gravy over vine ripe tomatoes.  He had biscuits for sopping’ too!  No Hazel to make biscuits for me but the tomato gravy was tasty!

Company Came

Ada came Sunday and she’ll be here several days…til Wednesday.  I’m trying to not just watch tv all day.

We are exercising, drawing, writing, and dividing up the day.  I don’t feel very successful.

New Cushions

Helen made new cushions for Grandpa Powell’s rocker.  Uncle Clayton gifted it to Erin.  Fleta has Grandma Powell’s rocker.  Erin said it sits good, too.

Building a Stable

Once a stable for the donkeys and horses was just a dream, but piece by piece it is becoming a reality. Today they poured the concrete.  Astrid took off work to help.  Logan and Astrid’s friends, Keith and Bob volunteered.  By winter the shelter will be ready for animals!

Zinnias

My Astrid has a flower garden of Zinnias!  They belong to the aster family.  Fits with my Asti💗 and are native to scrub and dry grassland in an area stretching from the Southwestern United States to South America.  Their  name honors German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn!  When other summer flowers succumb to high temps. Zinnias will be the last to die!

Cage the Elephant

Christensen's  enjoying Cage the Elephant last evening in Rogers, AR. Laura bought tickets for Eric’s Father’s Day gift.  Ing and Asti had tickets to but they are full time working girls now and it was a bit late when they got home.  Eric gifted the extra tickets to two young teachers he works with.  Sig invited Marvin.  I know this is a band and that’s all my knowledge of them.

Siggie got to shop at Lululemon.  She likes their brand.  Laura found a 70% off a sale rack at American Eagle.  Laura has always loved shopping for a bargain.

I’m starting back to Bible study at the Senior Center today.  My friend Kay has been going.
