Take Your Pick

What is worse than cold, cold?  Ice and snow on top of cold, cold.  The top picture is Denver, AR; the next is Harrison, next Galla Meadow and then an image Helen sent from the Douglas Road!  All look miserable to me.

I was planning on going to Kroger for a few things this morning but the urge went away when I saw how dreary the weather looked.

Amy~Patsy sent Larry and I a cookie Friday.  It was made with cranberries and oatmeal and so good.  Not much sugar--just enough.  After she mixed them up, they were to sit in the refrig for a certain amount of time and I think that is what made them so delicious.  All the flavors were mixed and perfect.

Erin does not have to work tomorrow.  I know she is glad to get to stay home.  The Rids don't have to go to school, but I think Eric has to attend professional development.  I am not sure about Laura.

Clayton and Greta have ventured out into the covering of snow.  I think those things they have are sleds!
Greta is sitting in high style here.  Maybe are Erin's office?
Pray for others.  I have may precious friends.   I give thanks for them today.  Also, rejoice in all the blessings I have received and continue to enjoy.

My devotional today reminded me that we are not self sufficient and that our bow and sword will not save!  We need help and will receive it when we ask!  What a Friend!  Always nearby, caring and protecting us!

It was 27 here last evening.  Warmer than I expected and I see the sun starting to shine.  Light overpowers dark!   I praise the Light!

Another Cold One

It was 24 here last evening.  Erin said 16 at Harrison.  I see the sun shining brightly.  Which makes the cold more bearable.  I am really glad we did not get any ice.  Ingie is just learning to navigate and I did not want her ice driving.  She has a babysitting job after school.  It is just for an hour but makes her some spending money.  Astrid came and ran some resumes as she is looking for a new job.  I took Ingie lunch yesterday--cheese dip from Stobys.  She texted and asked me to bring it.  I am a lazy, stay at home person, and thought of making an excuse, but then a second thought came about being--selfish and lazy--and I delivered it to High School.  I kept thinking about how happy I am that the students can not leave campus.  When Laura went there, they could leave at lunch and only had 30 minutes to eat!  Most tried to go and get a lunch!  Danger lurking!   Ingrid is very thin is another reason I wanted to give her some calories.

Jonell is going to be a Granny again.  I am working on a baby afghan for the little girl; I am calling her Jolie!  I think it would be a perfect name for her.  I finished the pastel throw and it is looking for a home.

Larry made me a small table for my new sewing machine. I can just put it where I need to when I am sewing.  I have not used the machine yet.  After the table has a finish on it I will.  My table has a small drawer for my scissors and tools.  It is made of oak and very nice.

Larry ordered some overalls to wear.  They are the carpenter type.  They look very nice on him.  Strips are slimming.

Clayton decided to eat in the lunchroom at school this week...but oh, he said he would take his lunch too and eat both!  Which he did!  Greta is moving up to advanced gymnastics.  She is good at lots of activities.  Only in first grade--she does not have to decide yet what she prefers--just do it all!   Clayton is playing upward basketball and was pleased to see a friend on his team.  Greta is playing too!  She is pleased when they dribble and run!  Coach told them to dribble around the half court and she did.  All the other girls went around the ENTIRE basketball court.  She has a hearing deficit but was the only one that heard!  Her Coach gave her a high five for listening!  She gave him a big smile!

Erin went to buy hot cider this morning  before work.  No ice at Harrison for which I am very thankful.  She found 54 cents lying in the parking lot so this is her lucky day!

I am reading a memoir by Amy Tan.  Then one called "A Stone of Hope".   So I am reading, crocheting, watching a hour of The Crown each day, looking for new cousins in Joe Powell and Uncle Walter's dna files, waiting anxiously to see cousin Win's, talking to Erin on the phone, texting a few lines with Jonell, thinking of calling Sister Fleta--and this thought came to mind--how many calories do all these activities use--about zero is my answer!

Laura gave me a new devotional for 2018.  It is a "read and respond" one.  I am enjoying it.  Today, the read was about calling on the Lord and him responding to that call.  I have been asking him to fill my heart with hope and leave not room for fear and other dreadfulness!   He has been answering my call!  Thank you Lord!  Warm up my heart today in these cool temperatures!

I filled my bird feeders yesterday and saw the little Finches this morning getting a meal!  I love the little Finches!

I am too lazy today to post a picture.  Imagine Clayton sitting on the basketball court with his friends!  Can you see my pretty oak sewing machine table my husband made me for my 47th anniversary?  Well, you will have to try to visualize  the sun shining brightly in Galla Meadow or Greta wearing her hoodie backwards, her lastest habit.  She puts the hood over her face!  Can you see Sigrid smiling at her new phone's message?  Skinny Ingie driving a big white rig?  Astrid adding more mascara to her lashes!  Phinnie destroying his new toys that I paid 25 dollars for at TJMaxx!  No pictures just images to pull up into your own mind today as I am still being a little lazy.  Warm weather gives me more energy as I was born in June.  If I can arrived on the Douglas Road in January like Sister Fleta the cold would make me move, but I did not so here I sat in a heavy, blue robe and a heated throw trying to stay warm!

Going To Pot....Pie

My pot pie turned out very tasty.  I told Larry I might do it again in 10 more years.  I used Betty C pie crust but let him think it was made by Betty R.  Since I started with a whole raw chicken, it was an all day chore.  Next, I want to try donuts again.  I made them for the girls some in their youth.  But I will have to rest a week or so before I try that.  I recall I had trouble finding the right size of cutter for the middle.  And...I wonder what type of oil would leave the least after taste from frying!?   Well, I have a while to ponder the donut adventure.  I will make them on the weekend so I can send some over across the Meadow!  Laura says the Pioneer Woman has a good recipe so I will use her advice on that.
Laura sent this and I thought--who is Ingie walking with at school.  Well, it is Sig and the young fellow's name is Gabe.  Sig's locker is right by Mr. C's room.  It is the same one the other girls used.  If Gabe hangs out by Sig's locker, Mr. C pops out of his door and tosses water bottlees at him.  Oh, the trials the Rid girls (AstRID, IngRID, SigRID) have endured having their Dad as their English teacher and watcher of all their hall activity in school!

Fleta says she believes Rootsweb will rise from the dead.  I hope so as I miss the reference.

I am thinking of going to the library to see if I can find anything to read.  I have been working on the pastel afghan from the scraps of yarn Helen gave me--that Tony gave her.  It is almost ready to sent to Douglas Road.

Erin and I spoke today about decisions we made as young girls growing up.  Erin said she always felt she was "better" than others she observed.  Now, that is not elitist thinking--but better as not to do, say, or choose some of the things others did.  It is a feeling of self worth.  I was taught to think that way and Erin said she thought that way also.  I hope it was from my example.  For I firmly believe children learn by example and not by the "harping" words of parents.  They see YOU so it is like the country song--"I'm watching you".  They may not listen but they see.  Don't let them see you lie, cheat, steal, manipulate...they will learn to do just that.

Warmer

But even though it is warmer, it is still pretty cold.   At 2:15 it is 44 degrees and I think that is below the average temperature for this time of year.

I am making chicken pot pie.  Larry mentioned that I used to make it some and so I am trying again.

Joe Foley gave a little speech yesterday and I read it.  I recall another young coach living in a trailer by the gym.  I copied the article here.  I enjoyed reading what he had to say.  Alabama beat Georgia last night.  Wonder what Saban earns?

A week beyond his 750th career victory, Joe Foley demurred his grand introduction at the Downtown Tip Off Club luncheon Monday afternoon in Little Rock.
He is the four-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year who led the University of Arkansas at Little Rock women's basketball program to its first 20-victory season in 2006, its first NIT Tournament in 2007 and its first NCAA Tournament in 2010.
"You go back over all that and we'll be done," Foley said, the crowd laughing in the conference hall at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock.
Before the hundreds of victories, Foley said, there was a trailer next to the Oxford High School gymnasium, where he'd stay late into the night coaching all the levels of basketball from 1979-1981.
It was where his girls varsity team once won a game after foul trouble left just two players on the court.
"There looked like there was three because some of the lights were out," he said.
It was where his boys varsity team once lost in triple overtime because he couldn't solve a 1-3-1 half-court trap.
"That stuck with me all these years, because I wasn't prepared," he said.
Foley said it may have been the best job he ever had. Perhaps it was because of its simplicity, the grass-roots innocence of small-town ball.
Nearly 40 years later, after his ascension from Oxford to Arkansas Tech to UALR, Foley intimated some of the game has lost its luster. It's the higher rate of collegiate transfers ("Loyalty, that's what's missing.); the player-compensation debate ("They don't need to be paid."); the inflated salaries of coaches ("Coaches don't need to be paid $6 million."); and the "entitlement" of an entire generation ("These millienials, they're something else.").
The fight against these forces keeps Foley tied to the game. Coaching, he said, is teaching kids the values to be successful. Basketball then will take care of itself.
Foley left Arkansas Tech University for UALR after 14 conference championships and two NAIA national championships in 1992 and 1993.
The Trojans had only 100 victories in the 14 seasons before Foley arrived in 2003, and the program was without a winning season.
Foley said he asked former Razorback and NBA center Joe Kleine to help out with his post players during that first season. Kleine arrived at practice and asked who his posts were.
"Pick your five and go work with them," Foley said. "All we had were 5-7 players."
Fifteen seasons and 296 victories later, Foley has a new challenge.
On Saturday, UALR (7-8, 4-0 Sun Belt) beat Georgia Southern 64-34 to earn the program's second consecutive 4-0 start in conference play. The Trojans, which beat Oklahoma 68-56 on Nov. 28, are beating their conference opponents by an average of 25 points.
"They've won four conference games, but about three weeks ago, I said, 'You guys are so worried about yourself that you don't even know what a team is,' " Foley said. "'You don't know what you're supposed to be doing together, and I'm tired of watching you play.'"
The Trojans were 3-8 at the time and had lost four consecutive games to Louisiana Tech, No. 3 Mississippi State, Kansas State and LSU.
Foley took away the Trojan-emblazoned practice jerseys and placed them in a closet.
"We haven't worn practice gear with Trojans or Little Rock on it in three weeks," he said. "And may not. May not. Because to me personally, if you don't put your teammates first, you don't need to play."
Foley addressed why the team's leading scorer, junior forward Ronjanae DeGray (12.8 points per game), isn't starting.
"Before I benched her, she was averaging six points," he said. "There's a reason that bench is over there. It's to get their attention. To me, Bobby Knight said it best: 'That bench goes straight from the butt to the brain.' "
Sensing the crowd -- which included the Tip Off Club's Player of the Week, Little Rock Christian junior Reagan Bradley -- Foley added "sometimes I can get pretty tough."
"So, Reagan, this is not a recruiting spiel, but it will tell you how I am. It will help you make a decision. Everybody knows we're recruiting her, that's all I'm allowed to say today. If you think we're dumb enough not to recruit her, you're crazy."
Laughter returned.
"I'm looking for challenges," Foley closed. "I've got a good challenge this year. And after that, we'll look for some more."

Bigger in Texas

Logan (Astrid's friend) went hunting in Texas.  I guess things are bigger down there.

Six Years Ago

Friends shared these two pictures with Laura on FB.  Astrid is in the 6th grade in the above pic.  She looks just like Sig to me.

Ingrid went to a sixteenth birthday for a friend and this picture was posted.

Skating -- Greta

Greta got skates for Christmas and has practiced there at the house.  Erin took them to Branson to try it at the rink.  She took the neighbor Addison along.  Greta did great and Clayton not bad as he had not practiced.  I love his reaction when he falls.

We had a close call with a fire Saturday.  All the land in front of our house burned.  At least three fire departments came to fight the blaze.  At one point they sat in our drive way to protect the house as the other trucks fought the blaze.  It burned about 20 acres.  The part to the south is really grown up.  If that had got away from them it would have been even worse.
This truck belongs to the city of Pottsville.  They came out with all their equipment.  Of course, Crow Mountain Fire was here.  That is our district.
The little community of Moreland sent this truck and it parked in our drive to make sure the fire did not get to our house.
I dreamed of having skates when I was in grade school.  If I had gotten some there was no concrete to practice on.  When I was in the 5 or 6th grade, our class went to Berryville to skate.  I was a pitiful.  I completely torn the knees from my pants.  My legs and knees were skinned up badly.  I needed one of those little contraptions like in the videos.  This was the only time I ever went skating.  I also dreamed of having a bicycle and riding off into the sunset.  We finally got a bike when I was a young teenager.  I think Helen won it somewhere.  I was not good with the bike either, but I have always loved bike riding.

Clayton and Greta went back to school last week.  They got their report cards and both did fine.  The three neighbor girls go back today.  All three came for a visit yesterday.  Larry is sick and so am I.

Today is our anniversary.  We have been married 47 years.

Sigrid is Swimming

The cold lingers.  It was 27 this morning and as half the day has disappeared the temperature has only reached 36 degrees.  Yesterday saw the 40s.  Today it probably will not make that mark.  I walked a bit yesterday.  Maybe today I will march inside as Erin suggested!
Sigrid has been swimming because Russellville now has an indoor facility.  She has a meet today at Clarksville.  She is doing very well.  Swimming is her favorite sport!
This is how Greta sees herself!  Notice the blue ear molds and purple hearing devices.  She is smiling.  She sees herself happy!
Clayton had to write an essay and think about why he should not jump in the trash can.  I used to make Erin write essays about what she should do and why she should not do certain things.  It makes one think about what has happened and put it into a organized thought.  Clayton did an excellent job explaining why he should not jump in the trash can!

Another Cold Day

It was 18 degrees here last night.  Many winters we don't even see that cold a morning.

Laura and I are going to Sam's today.

Wishing for balmy weather.  Erin said I would just march up and down in place in the house for walking.  I plan to try it.

Sister hit 70

70 is wormwood!  70 is gall!  Better to be 70, than not at all!

Erin said, "Mom, you are not far behind!"

Artic Day & Toboggan Hat

It is supposed to be above freezing today.  We will feel like a heat wave has arrived.  It was 16 this morning.
Erin wanted me to give her the recipe for chocolate gravy.  Mine looks about like this picture I found on a cooking site.
Put about 2 cups of milk in a bowl heat in microwave for about 4 minutes--I scald it.
In an old cool whip container mix a half a cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa, 2 tablespoons of flour and a pinch of salt--stir around with a spoon and then add a cup of water.  Mix together until the flour is all mixed in good.
Take hot milk out of microwave and stir in chocolate mixture.
Return to microwave for 2 minutes, take out and stir
Return to microwave for 2 more minutes.  It would be thick after this 4 minutes.  If not return 2 more minutes.
I add a little butter and a lot of vanilla.  Serve over biscuits!

My school lunchroom made chocolate gravy out of water--no milk.  I don't like it made out of water.  It was runny and darker.

Found this picture of Astrid and Sigrid that Astrid had sent me.  Sigrid got her new phone and it is working great she said.  Laura ordered the wrong one.  If you have ever ordered from Amazon, you will know that it's pretty easy to order the wrong thing when there is a long list with similar names.  But we sent the first phone back and Sig has the one she wanted.  Laura saved quite a lot getting it from Amazon.  Eric then took it to ATandT and had it connected.
I made Laura two toboggan hats this week.  I am going to post the directions--only for me to understand of the one made with rounds.
chain 4 and join
dc 6 times in the ring
dc 3 times in each dc making 18 dc
increase on every third dc, increase by 2, making 24 on next round
increase again making 32
increase again making 43
increase again making about 57
continue rounds joining each round until the hat is 7 inches long
last 7 rounds single crotchet, finish off

Erin wanted the recipe for my biscuits.  Mine are not like Momma's.  She baked huge, fluffy ones.  Ethel's were smaller and dense.  I cook more like Larry's Mom.  So Erin
put about a cup and a half of self raising flour in a bowl
add about a half stick of butter or shortening--cut in like pie crust
add milk until it was follow the spoon
add a little flour onto a walmart plastic sack
work a little and roll out and cut with a small cutter--maybe 2 inches
put some shortening on a flat pan--like a small cookie cutter
Bake in hot, hot oven--at least 430 degrees--until tops are brown!

Colder than Cold

If it gets down to 30 degrees at night, I call that cold.  Last night it was 10.  So I say it is colder than cold.  I read a blog from the country where Eric was born.  When I think it is cold I look at "Past 50" and quickly decide it is not so bad as I had thought.  No wonder so many of the retirees from the north country retire down south!  When it is 30 here, usually Past 50 will say it is 10 below.  Snow stays all winter.  What misery!

I hope I can move more in 2018.  I sit around a lot.  I like sitting around better than moving!  I want to be a better wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt, friend.....I don't want to hinder but help!  Now that is a tall chore for me!  But it is my wish for in 2018.

Everything I do is easy compared to what Momma endured.  At the time this picture was taken, all water we used was carried in buckets.  This is in the summer, but in winter the house was heated with one wood stove.  She had a handicapped child to care for daily.  If anyone had asked her at anytime in her life how she felt....she would have expressed happiness in the hand she was dealt!   Our attitude is important.  What a wonderful life is what Momma would have said at the end of her days.   Lord, let me be thankful for all Your blessings.
