Riding the Metro

Today my kids are going to the zoo.  The other days they have walked where they went, but today they had to figure out how to “ride the metro” to get to the zoo.  Looks like they made it.

I like this picture Laura sent me.  Women are homemakers as the commencement speaker said, but we are so much more.  

They rode this escalator today.  It is long and maybe underground.

Whoop Whoop

This morning Ingrid passed her board exams! She is officially a board certified nuclear medicine technologist. She was also the recipient for the clinical excellence award and academic excellence award for the class of 2024. I am so proud of her. Pop is smiling. Now, she starts a new chapter in her life.

Grandma Moses painting and crazy quilt

Both remind me of my sister Patsy.  She painted country scenes on burlap.  I had one at one time but guess I discarded it.  She also made crazy quilts.  From Smithsonian!

Sigrid and Ellie took in a Washington Nationals game today.  Laura and Eric visited the Smithsonian.  

 

War Everyday

New pictures of Sigrid came.  I’m getting mail for Laura so I brought the pkg. over here.  I chose these three.  It was hard to chose.

I got another prisoner of war today.  I turned him loose over Galla Lake.  I’ve moved three so far it will continue all summer but I am stubborn and don’t surrender easily.

Reading

 Read these two books this week.

My Side of the River is about a girl born in Tucson, Arizona.   Her parents were illegals.  They would get tourist visas but stay as long as they could.  They worked but could not do it legally.  They made sure Elizabeth was born in the USA.  The father was well educated but there is no work in Mexico that pays well.  Finally, they can’t get visas.  Elizabeth stays in Tucson.  She lives with several different families but has little money or help.  She graduates the top of her class.  I liked it.  Poor people trying to make a better life.  

I don’t read fiction if I can find anything else.  I’ve been drawing blanks.  A friend at Mary’s funeral recommended This is Happiness.  The setting is Faha, Ireland.  The town and area are getting electricity.  It is really good and I think Clift Wood would enjoy it.  I sure did.

Eric and Laura left at 4 AM.  It was night when they got to DC.  Sigrid had to go to the Capitol immediately.  She looks like she’s comfortable there!

June is Here

Helen gifted me an orchid. It’s blooming.  I’ve never had one before. Figured I’d kill it.

Last winter Fleta gave me marigold seeds.  When all plant prices shot through the roof, I decided to try the seeds in my old wheel barrel planter.  They came up, look good and have grown.  Hope they bloom.

Eric, Laura and Sig are in Washington DC.  Sig’s friend Ellie is a page to Tom Cotton.  They have a great week planned.  Eric said he could just go to the Smithsonian everyday.  I have Peach and Pretty.  Peach is a rescue and has issues.  I have them in the dog pen.  They are house dogs.  I have stressed over them being ok.  There’s a big dog house and I stretched a trap over it.  They don’t know what a dog house is.  I’m hoping they’ll go in the house if it rains.  I’m the dog setter!

Saw potato vine, skull cap, and an entire field of blackeyed susans!

Wild potato vine is known as man of the earth, manroot, wild sweet potato, and wild rhubarb and is native to North America. It is a twining plant of woodland verges and rough places with heart-shaped leaves and funnel-shaped white flowers with a pinkish throat.

Skullcap is a flowering plant of the mint family used in traditional medicine. Supplements may provide health benefits, including improved mood, reduced inflammation, and anticancer effects. But research continues on possible side effects.

Rudbeckia, commonly called Black-eyed Susan, is a classic perennial flower that shows off bright yellow, gold, or bronze flowers with striking dark brown centers. Black-eyed Susan is an easy-to-grow North American wildflower that's excellent for attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinating insects.  Other common are brown-eyed Susan, brown betty, gloriosa daisy, golden Jerusalem, English bull's eye, poor-land daisy, yellow daisy, and yellow ox-eye daisy.
