Old Ditch Lilies are Blooming

Facts:
*By the 17th century ditchlilies  arrived in North America to serve as medicine, food and decoration for home gardens.
*Early pioneers had no time to spend on delicate ornamentals. The ditchlily was strong and required little care, so it became quite popular among the rough homesteaders.
*It is a plant that multiplies well and is seldom bothered by disease.
*The boiled water from cooking ditchlilies was saved and used as a tonic for pain relief by early herbalists.
*The juice from pounded roots can be added to a few drops of water and will act as a diuretic.
*The water from boiled roots is used as a tonic to reduce fever.
*The water from boiled ditchlily blooms produces a golden yellow dye and from the foliage and stems comes a delicate green dye.
*The buds of ditchlilies provide more vitamin C than either asparagus or string beans, while boasting a much higher percentage of protein than either.
*Ditchlilies are also used to help prevent erosion particularly on hillsides where trees have been harvested.
Food:
*All parts of the ditchlily are edible, though the fleshy roots are considered medicinal.
*The long crunchy buds can be  added to a lettuce and green onion mix for a tasty salad.
*The stems and leaves can be boiled in water, added to kale or other cooked greens.
*Harvest ditchlilies the day that the flower-pods begin to open. They have a sweet flavor and crisp texture.
*Ditchlily buds at any point in their growth can be dipped in a creamy flour batter and then quickly fried in very hot oil. This is a delicacy in some cultures.
*The ditchlily bud tastes delicious in soups, salads, and stir-fries.
*And one more little known fact:  swaths of daylilies for mile after mile have been planted across some California hills as firebreaks. Daylilies consist mostly of water.

May is Ending

My renter put new lights on my front porch because she broke one globe.  Laura went to Lowe’s and bought the same ones for her porch.  I like her wreath.  It will work for now, Flag Day, and July 4th.
Astrid put this photo on one site.  She and Logan went kayaking with his Mom and one other.  They went down the Illinois Bayou.  Logan said it took over 2 hours.  Neither Logan or Asti flipped but his Mom did.  Sort scary.
Astrid fixed this where the water runs off my house by the carport.  Hope it works.  If not she said they’d try gutter.  I have the best renter.

Astrid has 2 raised beds of garden stuff.

Sigrid is Smart too!

Sigrid made all A's, but she is most happy about getting the metal out of her mouth--I think about July 24th or so.  Soon, anyway!
Seeing chickens in the yard always reminds me of Patsy.  She loved chickens.  I like them too.  I don't like white ones.  Grandma Powell always raised leghorns.  They were white, but I like red chickens the best.

Surprise for Momma

While Laura was at Harding University getting Ingrid settled into her dorm, Astrid removed Laura’s old table and replaced it with this one Astrid had bought off FB and redone for her Mom.  The chairs are light green not white like they look in the one picture.  What a nice surprise.

Pattie Cobb & Mark Hamilton Berry

I think Ingrid is so lucky to be able to reside at Pattie Cobb.  It is the oldest dorm at Harding University!  I read an acticle about the Dorm written by a former resident.  I will copy it below my photos.  So if you aren't interested it is at the bottom...but I so agree with blogger Liz Harrell.
Ingrid's roomie is from Hot Springs!

About Pattie Cobb--by Liz Harrell
I recently overheard a group of college students chatting about their newly built dormitories. They were proud of their shiny new kitchens and individual bedrooms. Their excitement was palpable and it made me smile. It also made me reminisce about my own college dorm. Perhaps at their age I'd read entirely too much Edgar Allen Poe, but a shiny new dormitory was not on the top of my college wish list. I dreamed of something beautiful, old, and slightly haunted.
PattieCobb4
My college dormitory, Pattie Cobb, was constructed in 1919. Originally Holmes Hall, she’s one of the last two structures from the original Galloway Women’s College. Harding University, my alma mater, purchased Galloway’s property in 1943, and now Pattie Cobb sits at the center of campus, surrounded by tall trees and steeped in traditional college charm. She makes a grand and distinguished picture, bookmarked by pillared verandas that bring to mind tall glasses of lemonade and old money. She is, without a doubt, the queen of campus.
As you enter through the main doors and walk down dual staircases, chandelier overhead, its polished appearance makes it easy to forget the building has had many faces over the years. It was first a residence hall for the women’s college, then a spliced dormitory- office-cafeteria, and now she’s back to a full time women’s residence hall. Hundreds of thousands of meals were served in her cafeteria basement for over 40 years until it closed, and my own mother, who was a student in the 1970’s, would often visit me, sniff the air and say, “I can still smell the green beans.”
It decidedly did not smell like green beans (my mother’s olfactory nostalgia aside), and the basement cafeteria is gone, replaced by additional dorm rooms. The interior walls were covered in what was referred to as Pattie Cobb Purple, a shade somewhere between lavender and gray (although currently they’re a decidedly less quirky shade of beige). The day I moved in and began my job as resident assistant, the dorm mother, Joetta Martin, welcomed me, winked and said, “Watch out for Gertie.”
Gertie, as it turned out, was the legendary ghost of Harding’s campus. And because I believed at the time (and still do) that all respectable old buildings need a good ghost story, the prospect thrilled my heart.
PattieCobb3
The legend originated in Godden Hall, a massive Gothic structure originating with Galloway Women’s College. Gertrude’s tale was a tragic one. She was a student, and after returning home one night to Godden Hall, plunged to her death down an abandoned three story elevator shaft. It was ruled an accident. Rumors flew, complete with tales of foul play.  Following her death, the rumored ghostly occurrences began. Students began reporting a woman in white walking the halls, and sometimes through walls.
And below is Mark Hamilton Berry--Adjutant General of Arkansas
Ingrid's city is Berry City after General Berry.  I found an interview with him from the Demo-Gazette.  Must say I did not know who he was.

And there, outside his office, is a doormat announcing his rank -- two stars. If you're comfortable, go ahead and wipe your feet on the TAG's stars.

"If he gets a third star, does the doormat get replaced?" I asked jokingly.

Lt. Col. Keith Moore, the guard's public information officer, and Sgt. Stephanie Eddington, Berry's office aide, assured me it would indeed. Their affirmations had a kindly condescension common to uniformed staff confronted by civilian liberal arts majors.

Anyway, it's moot. The 59-year-old won't get that third star. In fact, this is his last duty. Like Arkansas state judges, the military forces retirement. Approaching 60 now, he's got about four years. So unlike his predecessor, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) William Wofford, Berry won't serve in Hutchinson's cabinet should the governor get re-elected.
And lastly--Hannah King is at Girls' State from Green Forest, AR.  She is Ingrid's cousin!

Arthur I Tist

Well, Larry made me go to Dr with my left wrist.  That arm is pretty well useless.  Dr. Kelly said I broke it long ago and it has healed but that has caused arthritis.  When it started to hurt last fall--badly--he said the bones separated more.   I told him I would just use it as an excuse to not do anything I did not want to do.  He said "yes, and I will write you a Doctor's Excuse!

Vice President

Sigrid is an officer in her National Honor Society.  She ran and won!  She told me yesterday she was nervous about the election.  Nervous no more—winner for sure.

Nails of purple

Erin and Ada practiced leaving the house yesterday.  They went to a garage sale.  Maybe she said at Branson.  They were away for over an hour I am sure and it all went well.
I put a gift certificate for Siggie to get her nails done in her Easter basketball.  She chose lavender.

Clayton likes these shirts with thumb hooks.  Erin bought him one yesterday.  I think it was new not at the garage sale.
Super hero day at Greta's school!
Erin got Greta a new rain coat and this cute outfit.  Pretty sure she said the outfit was from the garage sale she and Ada went to.
Yesterday was book character day at Greta's school.  She was Mrs. Wishy Washy.  I love her look!
