Desserts
We celebrated today with desserts! Astrid created the flag! Ingrid baked a pound cake with red, white and blue swirls throughout! Both girls are fabulous cooks. Laura made coconut cream pie and I baked lemon! I used my friend Vicki Johnson’s pie crust recipe! I have a Dover Baptist Church cookbook and she has several recipes in it!
The younger bunch had a little fish fry with trimmings. Logan, Justin and friends caught the fish yesterday! Girls fixed hotdogs too! I came back home not wanting to have old lady ruining their fun!
Two Blonds Riding
Astrid is riding Whiskey using my old Lamb saddle made in Green Forest, AR. Below Helen is riding our old Red using the same saddle. Daddy bought Red and the saddle when I was burned after a day of killing hogs in November 1963. I missed school about 2 months as my back was burned so badly I could not wear a bra or proper shirt. I put shirts on backwards and Mommy tied them in back. My little brother turned the gas stove on and my clothes caught fire. I ran. Daddy finally caught me and put the fire out with his hands. I still carry the scars on my back. I still recall the smell of burning flesh.

Walking near Coin AR
Sister had the best food. Ribeye and roasted vegetables. All so good. I had a great time and attended my cousin’s service. Good to be back home again.

Outhouse Lilies
Saw the first Ditch Lily blooms this morning. The orange day lilies are called Ditch, Railroad, and outhouse lilies because they have spread along traveled paths. Deer turn up their noses at Ditch lilies. Bees and butterflies aren’t crazy about the trumpet-shaped blooms either.

Manure in the Street
Marshall, 1912
Main Street was rough dirt and horse manure was in the street, but you can see a new sidewalk. This postcard was sent to a friend of J. H. Gentry in Oklahoma and he wrote on the card—Work has opened up pretty good here now but I’m working 10 hours for $3.00.

Surging Ahead
Sister Helen purchased a serger. The three huge spools of thread frightens me. How did she ever get it threaded! She is liking how it works!

Bee Please
Never too old to learn new things. I had a peek into the bee hive today. Brenda Holmes gave lesson 101. I passed🐝. Well, I did not get stung! Bees reminded me of a few classes I’ve been in charge of at school. Ones where some kids had issues. Move slow, don’t upset anyone, stay calm. They smell fear just like children do. Be friends! Whew, glad that’s over and no bees flew up my pants leg🐝❤️🐝

My war with the squirrels has started. This one has a new home with lots of oak trees—a graveyard across Galla Lake from me. I don’t hate squirrels but I am feeding birds not squirrels.
Catalpa tree is full of blooms! Petals are creating a pretty carpet. A squirrel hunter from Georgia gave Larry this tree. It is a good source of fishing bait!
This is where I spotted Foxy this morning. He knocked the feeder to the ground. I am thankful it didn’t break.Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Nuttall’s Briar
Black eyed Susan’s are blooming!
I saw a few new blooms this morning—the wild petunia and Nuttall’s Sensitive Briar. The briar of the mimosa family. The leaves and blooms are very much like those on a mimosa tree. I recall being fascinated by the leaves when a kid growing up at Coin, AR. They’re sensitive. If you touch them they close up! The petunia is very fragile. Blooms only last a day.
