Arkansas Bluestar

Arkansas Bluestar at Lake Dardanelle State Park

Amsonia hubrichtii, commonly called bluestar, Arkansas amsonia or Hubricht's amsonia, is an uncommon perennial that is native to the Ouachita Mountains in central Arkansas.   I saw this one yesterday when Phinnie and I went walk at the Park.  In the summer the plant has a five pointed star bloom that is light blue, but I think it’s prettiest in the fall when it’s featherly leaves turn shades of yellow and orange.

It belongs to the dogbane family of plants.  Any plant in the dogbane family is said to be poisonous to dogs.  Deer do not like dogbane plants.

I did not take the blooming photo as it blooms in early summer.
