Student from 50 years Ago

Had the best lunch with a former student, Cassandra.  We went to the Old South Restaurant!  I chose a blackened chicken salad—very good! But fellowship with Sandy was even better.

She was a student in my class in 1973.  I gave her the blanket I made for her grandson who is arriving in February.

Painting Class

Laura and Astrid took a paint class Saturday.  They chose a Cardinal in Dogwood blossoms.  Dreaming of spring.  Helen would me good at this.  I’m a miserable colorer and painter.

Serve and Protect

You know you’re old when children you taught in 1973 are becoming grandparents.  This little gift goes to a grandmother who was in my first group of kids at RMS!  Her son is in law enforcement.  I stitched this to honor the baby of a man who serves and protects!

I didn’t have a pattern, just an image.  I’m too tight to buy patterns.  I don’t know if I’d really like it til I see the directions and I’d be afraid after paying I didn’t really want to make it.

Howling at the Moon

It was a little foggy last evening but the wolf moon was still shining strong!  It’s called the Wolf Moon because wolves  howl more at this time.  Howling wolves are trying to locate pack members, form social bonds, claim their territory, and coordinate hunting.  Guess it’s like their cell phones!  The first picture is mine and the second is from Martha Stewart!

RSV

Today, I got my RSV shot.  Been hearing of folks getting this virus and I don’t want it.  And I’m way over 60 years.  Don’t want to say “I can’t breathe”!  I got mine at my favorite C and D Drug Store!  It’s locally home owned and operated!  A pretty little blond waited on me.

Sickness andHealth

Ada has had the flu.  Darlene even felt sorry for her.  She slept a lot, threw up some.  She suffered, but today she tried to go to school again.  She made it through the day.  Maybe tomorrow will be even brighter.

Greta has Game

Humor me!  These are great shots of my Greta from the tourney this weekend.   They are water marked from the photographer.  I love all of them.  Her shorts must be too big.  She has them rolled several times!  Greta is only in 7th grade.  Hope she continues to love the game.

Clean Up

Sigrid finally was able to afford pictures for the frames she bought to hang above her couch.  She got the frames but was blindsided by the cost of the larger photos.  She likes that they cover lots of old nail holes in the wall.  She’s having an inspection this week and requested her mother come and help her “clean up”.  Laura likes keeping things neat and uncluttered.  I'm a  master clutterer.  I wish I’d inherited the clean up/pick up gene instead.  My mother carried it.  I got Grandma Powell’s hoarder gene.  I have a difficult time throwing things away.  When I discard something, I think of a way I could have put it to use.
My son in law is ill.  I’m hoping he’ll bounce right back. Last night, Laura took him to emergency.  He has RSV.  I want that vaccine but there was a short supply and I thought the young children needed it more than I.  I will check with Sigrid at the pharmacy and see when I can get it.  Ada and Greg have had the flu.  I had that shot so I’m hoping I don’t get that.  Wishing everyone blue sunny skies and health.

Winner

Greta got to start the game as the jumper!

The Goblins played in a basketball tournament at Mountain Home Saturday.  They took home the first place trophy.  Beat Flippin in the final game.

Greta looks good with the trophy.

Logan 25

My grandson Logan has a birthday today!  He’s half of 50.  My lucky day was when he and my Asti fell for each other.  He’s a hard working man!  Happy Birthday👷‍♂️👨‍🏭👷‍♂️👨‍🔧

Got everything I own

By the sweat of my brow

From my four-wheel drive to my cowboy boots

I owe it all to my blue collar roots

I feel like I'm workin' overtime on a runaway train

Can’t bust loose from this ball and chain!

Brooks and Dunn

Astrid had a little surprise party for Logi Bear last night, but this hard working man was pouring concrete on over-time!  It all worked out as he finally got home and we yelled “surprise, happy birthday!”  We really weren’t surprised that he was working late ‘cause he’ll work ‘til the job is done!  Astrid Roberts

Bread is Still in the Oven

When Grandma Gertrude Maples Powell was president of the Sunny Lane Home Demonstration Club in 1950, the Club  published a cookbook like so many groups do today. She was 60 years old. The Three Sisters have one copy.   Here are some of their household hints from the Sunny Lane book:

Box crackers will keep better if stored in the pots and pans drawer of your stove.

To eliminate cabbage odor when cooking drop a whole English  walnut in boiling water.

Give extra gloss to linoleum by adding a little clothes starch to the mop water.

Clothes won't freeze on the line if you had a half cup of salt to the last rinse.

January 18th is Grandma’s birthday—133.  She never cut her hair and wore it in a bun on her head.  She was a widow at 63.  She sold the farm near Sunny Lane and moved to North Springfield Street, Green Forest, Arkansas.  She lived in a downstairs apartment and rented the rest.  All had a shared bathroom.  She was a survivor!

Grandma’s house 2010 and below 1910.   Springfield street was dirt in 1910.  It was the road to Springfield, MO.
All farm women made bread once a week for their families in Grandma Powell's day.  Grandma saved her yeast.  She placed a piece of the dough in a jar with sugar and water and this yeast would grow until the next time she baked. In the 1940's grandma stopped baking bread.  Her family was grown and she made quick bread for each meal. In the 1950's , she found her yeast wrapped in a cloth stored in her black trunk. It was a dry piece and grandma wondered if it was still alive. She placed the dough ball in warm water and sugar and behold it was active and she baked bread again. This receipt is in my Grandma’s  handwriting from her precious  cookbook. This is the picture of her bread receipt in her own handwriting.  Sister Patsy 2006

Grandma’s Great Granddaughter Jennifer saw her receipt (as Grandma said) on FB where I posted it.  She  tried her recipe!  Look at this loaf.  It made several she said!  Looks so delicious.  I’m imaging it with butter melting and blackberry jam on it—like Grandma’s♥️
