The practice of eating peas for luck dates back to the Civil War. Originally peas were used as food for livestock and enslaved people in the South. Because of their lowly reputation, the Union Army troops of General Sherman ignored the fields of “cow” peas on his March to the sea. During that harsh winter, many southerners survived on the remaining peas. This promoted the humble legume as a symbol of fortune and prosperity in the American South.
