Computer Tech--I need my own!

I bought a new printer that has network
capabilities and will print front and back. I
bought it because I would like to write some
books and I can print them myself.

Technology comes with headaches. I had to figure
out how to put in on the network. The disk with it
would not load on vista. Had to go on line and find
the drivers. The exact name of the printer was not
there.

Finally took it back and told them it would not work.
They had it print front and back down there. So I
brought it home and started over.

I have 2007 Microsoft word. Can't even find the button
on it for advanced print. It just has a quick print
button. Finally went on line and found where to find
the button.

Went back to work on the printer. Called HP and was
on the phone mostly waiting for an hour. The young
man at the store suggested this.

About an hour ago I hooked the printer to the computer
with a direct cord. Got the driver I thought was right--
still this disk did not have the printer I bought listed.

But with persistance everything will work out. I got the
printer loaded with a driver number that was almost like
the printer number I bought. Found the duplex button on
from word. It was under the page listed as Finishing in
properties. Tada...I printed something front to back.

Patsy, call Fleta and tell her you are glad she will come
over to help you. I can't call her to come ...it is too
far and gas is still too high.

Now, will I ever write a book. I am wanting Larry to write
one about squirrel hunting and sell it at his site...he
said "I can't write a book", but I think he can.

Persimmons

This Persimmon tree is in Galla
Meadow. I may eat some after the
first frost.

Copy Cat

I had two old cameras and gave them
to Astrid and Ingrid. Siggie got this
toy camera that will take pictures and
she thinks she is a pro like Erin. She
will take a shot and then tell you to
look at it. All I see is a bunch of
snow on the screen but she can see a
beautiful picture that she took. The
eye of the beholder is in the heart?

Erin Moving on Up

Erin asked to go to days at the Hospital. I
think she will like it...she will go in a 7
and be off at 3. She will get to rotate days
so some weekends she will be off and sometimes
her days off will fall during the week. Clayton
will gain the most....more time with Momma. When
she was with him before she was so tired from
working all night that we was only partly there.
I am happy for her...hope you are too!

Four Joys!

I can tell by the look in Clayton's
eyes that he knows the the girls are
little folks like he is. And he likes
them a lot.

Great Joy--Reading

If I had only one talent to wish upon
my Grandchildren, I would hope that they
would be good readers. Reading is a joyful
pastime and nothing compares to the benefits
gained. When I went to College I often, heard
fellow students cry about having to read
several chapters each evening. It was not
problem for me as I have been excellent reading since Mrs. Atchley lit that spark in my soul
when I was in the 4th grade. I could read before
that but she introduced me to the joy I could
find there.

Here are three of the books I am reading.
Where did I put my Glases? is about memory
loss. Martha Lear wrote it. I have been
trying to finish it for 3 months, but am
only half way through it...I can't remember
to finish it and it just lays on the table.
I think John McCain could benefit from the
book. He should read it, but I would venture
to guess that he is not a reader. What do
you think?

I finished the Hemingses of Monticello -- An
American Family last weekend. Annette Gordon-Reed
wrote this book about the entire Hemings family.
I have read several other books about Sally
Hemings and Jefferson. I really enjoyed the
book. Jefferson believed that the black race
was inferior to the white. He thought that
mixing white blood with the black improved
the intelligence of the blacks. If a person
in VA was born to a mixed race mother, he
was black. Sally's grandmother was black.
Her mother was half black/half white. She was
3/4 white and her Hemings children had a white
father...go figure...how much black, but they
were slaves.

The third book and the one I am reading now is
My Father's Paradise-- A son's search for his
Jewish past in Kurdish Iraq. It is by Ariel
Sabar. It is about a man born in CA who grew
up like a beach boy. His father was professor
at UCLA. When Ariel becomes a father, he
decides to discover his father's roots. His
father moved from the hills of Iraq to Isreal
to the USA. He grew up speaking the language
of Jesus. It is a very interesting book.

I enjoyed taking the history and news quizes
that Fleta posted. I enjoy reading a good
book. I enjoy drinking black coffee in the
early morning when most of the world sleeps.
I enjoy my sister's blogs and my children's.
I enjoy going for a long walk and that is
where I am off to now!

Taking Quizes

I have been taking Fleta's quizes and
checking out names. Erin has the most
common name of my bunch. There are two
of Astrid, 9 of Ingrid and Sigrid is an
original. There are several of little
Clayton.

Renfroe is rarer than Powell. Poor is
not a common name. i did not check Aday,
See or Jones. But Christensen was much
more common than I thought and there are
a bunch of my son-in-law Christensen out
there but more of Greg Joneses than you
would believe.

On the news quizes I scored from 50 plus
to in the 70s and I may start taking these
everyday. I will have to send myself the
links because at my work all our blogs are
blocked--they are classified bad sites for
education. I honestly don't see why. I can
see how a teacher could use a blog with the
classroom. You can set them up so the comments
are sent to you before post and the teacher
could check everything before it is posted.
In fact some of the blog sites are ok, but
the google one we use is banned.

Walking and What I saw

Helen, I took this...this morning on
my walk. It is too dark to take any
pictures. It was raining a little too.

Galla Lake is full

It is raining outside now. Galla Lake is
full but the rain is bringing cooler weather
and I am ready. It was in the 80s today. I
am ready for 70s or 60s.

Biggest Role

The big role of my life has been the
one where I played "Mother". Now, that
role is really over and I have a new role
Grandmother. My daughters have taken my
place in my old role. I think they are
better performers than I was. I just
whizzed through my part in my play and
whooozz...it was over. They seem to be
taking time to enjoy their time on life's
stage.

We Do Have some Matches

I continue to plow through the data on the DNA site.
Even though we had no Powell exact matches on our first
12 markers of our y DNA we did HAVE exact matches. I have
removed some of the data as to be simple and not confuse.
The first column is the country where the match was and
the second is the number of matches there. These were
exact matches of our y dna on the first 12 markers. I think
NOONE matched our 37 markers. But that may notbe right...
some of these may actually be an exact copy of
our DNA...you will notice the countries were we had the most
matches were English born. And some folks may have put England
as their country of origin and live in the United States. We
put Unknown on Charles Powell data. The information said this
folks genetic makeup was most like ours...did not use the word
related.

We are Unique

Our DNA did not match any of the other
Powell groups tested.

theory 1
Charles Powell was the immigrant to the US.
He came alone.

theory 2
Charles Powell's father or he was a foundling
like Duke Whalebone and we are not Powells.

theory 3
Duke Whalebone was Charles Powell's father

theory 4
Clayton is the only Powell from our group to
be tested so far and we will find some matches later.

One regret--did not get to hear Brother's
stories one more time.

Another Big Regret

Another big regret in my life today....is
I did not get any pretty brown eggs from
my red hens like Patsy did. This is what
I got. Six of them today.

My Big Regrets--For Helen

1. Not knowing who Charles Powell's father is!!
He died in 1744.

2. Not knowing who Richard Kiff is? He was
Sarah Powell's father. Don't really know who
he is!

3.Not knowing what happened to John Powell when
he went off the the Confederate Army. I think he
died but we have no record.

4. Not knowing the first Powell to set foot in the
USA.

5. Not knowing what group of Garrisons Jacob J.
Garrison belongs to. He was born in New Jersey and
died in Henry County, MO. Who are his parents.

These are huge regrets....I have not solved them,
but have not given up. I want to know other things
too. Mostly they concern dead people. I know Helen
will say...if these are my only regrets I must have
gotten most of my wishes.

Something Different

Today I am home sick and thinking.

Palin reminds me of those Mom's that
want their daughter to be head cheerleader.
I am a christian, but I hate, hate, hate.

Poor Old McCain's life was messed up when
he was held prisoner. AND he has a problem
with anger. He knows he is right and what
everyone else thinks is horse shit. Patsy
read his lips and he said it more than once.

Obama is a mystery to all of us. We are
unsure of what will happen if he wins. But
things will be different and that is what
America is crying for...a change in policy.

Biden is a steady Democrat. He is ready to
step into the President's chair if it becomes
empty during Obama's term.

There are no Bill Clinton's. Of all the
President's in my lifetime...that I can
recall as an adult (I remember the Nixon
days, but can't remember Eisenhower)...
the one we have now is the worse I have
lived through and I have not survived him
yet. The best leaders in my lifetime
was our own Bill Clinton and John Kennedy.
They were a lot a like. I remember my
father having a spark of hope for our
lives when Kennedy ran against Nixon.

I can say I don't have that spark with
this election. My hope candle was snuffed
out by a big Bush. When I think of him I
think of the Queen saying "let them eat
cake" when her people had no bread. Such
ignorance.

Rant over.

Clayton and Soccer

Clayton went to one of Astrid's soccer
games and this is what he thought about
it. He says he is paying basketball.

Paths we take!

Patsy, if our DNA points to
Maryland...names will not matter...but
the Isle of Wight DNA and the Maryland DNA
is the same. Early men that came were often
related. I am bothered by the Catholics of
Maryland. I do believe we are protestants.

Here is a path to follow. Betty Powell had
granddaughters named Astrid, Ingrid, and Sigrid.
Follow that back to Hazel and all those other
names...but now look at my Grandson and see
the Powell heritage in his name.

I am so hoping that the DNA test will help
us see who we are before the American coastline
settlement.

Hardy Powell

One of the men that Clayton's DNA matched
was an ancestor of Hardy Powell. I found
Hardy in Dublin County, NC by 1790 next
door to a Brittain Powell. I remembered
seeing Brittain Powell before. So I got
my Powells of the South book and found
that Brittain and Hardy are likely grandsons
of a John Powell of Maryland. John Powell
was the son of Walter Powell of Maryland
who was married to Margaret Berry. They
came with Lord Boltimore...is my guess.
Walter is there in the early 1600s. So
I am thinking if the DNA turns out with
the other markers that our Charles Powell
came to Stafford County, Va from over the
Potomac in Maryland and Walter Powell is
his grandfather too. At the time these
Powells lived the eldest son got everything
his father had. So if a man had many sons
some could end up with nothing.

I can't wait for the rest of our test to
get posted. Maybe my Oct. 15...

The story of the greasy God that Daddy and
his cousins told is talking of Duke Whalebone
is my belief.

My little Brain

http://www.cswnet.com/~erin/images/Erin's%20pic/OldPictureSafe/OUR-YDNA.jpg
You will have to copy and paste the link in
your browser but there is a bigger jpeg here
so you can see our ydna markers and these others
that we match 11 of 12 with...the one from Wales
we match 10 of 12.
Clayton matched several of these with 11 matches.
You can see where on of his markers is 11 these
others are 12.
34753--George Washington Powell born 1847 in Al.
N115530--Still in the U K
N34854--Hinton Powell born 1802 in Ga.
97957 Eaton Powell born 1793 in Nc
84445 William Powell born 1642Isle of Wight, VA
11042 Wm. Romulus Powe born 1790 in Va(man now
lives in Australia who was tested)He went from
VA to MO to California to Australia.
One in Wales Clayton is off 2 markers.

I am so excited about getting the rest of the
markers and see if we match up to one of these
lines.

Who Am I?

The first 12 markers of our Powell DNA are
in. I am so excited. I can't wait for the other
25 marker test. I may break loose with more
money for more tests. Clayton will not have to
scrap his check again...they have the dna.

OK...here are 4 y matches to our father with 11
of the 12 makers ...we will know more when our 37
marker test is complete and it is to be done by the
last of October. The Powe family below came through
VA and he has a gedcom of his ancestors at the site.
John Richard Powell (Y67) rpowell@powellmetto.com
Mr. Terrell James Powell (Y67) tpowell@pmsiofflorida.com
Mr. Steven Grenville Powell steven.powell@sky.com
Leon Johnathan Lyell (poe) (Y25) l.lyell@latrobe.edu.au
I know John Richard is descended from
Worthy Powell, but these others I do not
know. One is a Poe???

Also our haplo group is R1b1b2

What is a halpo group...copied this from
Family Tree Maker
The haplogroups are the major branches on the Y chromosome tree, defined single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which have accumulated along different lineages as Y chromosomes are passed from father to son over many generations. All haplogroups ultimately descend from a single Y chromosome carried by a male that lived in the distant past. The topology of the Y chromosome tree can be reconstructed by typing mutations in different human populations – as more SNPs are discovered (e.g., M254), the structure of the tree changes. Originally, the Y Chromosome Consortium (YCC) arbitrarily defined 18 haplogroups (A-R), which represent the major divisions of human diversity based on Y chromosome SNPs. Currently there are 20 haplogroups (A-T). In turn, each of these major haplogroups has numbered subgroups, or subclades, that are named with alternating letters and numbers.

And Mr. Poe has a gedcom so now I am going to
go look at our cousins of a different name.
Patsy...you can put that number in google and
find more about R1b1b2
