Lady from Treat, AR

My sweet friend Mary Bourne brought a wedding gift to Logan and Astrid Roberts!  She embroidered two pillow cases!  See the hearts!  💙

Old friends are gold and ones from the Mountains are pure gold!  Mary came down from Treat today!  She amazes me—93 years young!

See how little she is in the car.  She was almost 5 foot at one time but now she tiny!  She said she read you should be able to see the end of the hood of your car to drive safely!  “I can’t anymore”, she said.

 

Driving a Honda

I’ve been looking for a new car.  This one is used.  It has 5,000 miles.  A family bought it and decided it was too small for them, but it perfect for me.

It’s a 2023 Honda HRV.  The tires are 18’s and it is a light color.  Laura is going to drive my RAV4.  We traded her Nissan in.  It has heated seats and starts remotely.  Laura thinks I’ll like that.

Graveyard or Cemetery?

 My friend Kay asked if I knew the difference.  A graveyard is by a church and a cemetery is land set aside for burial ground with no church.  

Coon Hunting

 My brother Richard loved to Coon hunt.  I went with him once when I was a kid.  I remember his dog Duke.  This was found in my cousin Tim’s property when he passed away.  I guess Dad sent it to Tim so he could see Richard’s great Coon dog.  He sold Duke because he was offered a large amount for him and he was a young father and could use the money.

Busy girls

Sigrid attended a dance with her sorority.  She looks lovely in the green dress.  She paid less than 30$.  She’s thrifty.

Astrid is still playing soccer.  Looks like they won something.  Astrid’s also still running in races too.  

 

Cheerleaders

Three sisters best side.  When Laura took me to Harrison to cheer Greta playing basketball, look who came as back up cheerleaders.  Well, Sister Helen was loudest head cheerleader.  I asked Greta if we embarrassed her.  She said with hearing devices she can’t hear what’s yelled in the stands.  Maybe a good thing!

 

Lollygaggers

 Astrid and Logan are in the “stocks”.   In the Bible, Paul and Silas were put in stocks by the jailer.  Acts 16:24 On receiving this order, he placed them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in stocks.  Jeremiah was also placed in stocks.  So, they’ve been around a long time.  The first ones fastened the feet not head and arms.  Passersby hurled insults and even spat on the offenders.  Humiliation is a huge punishment.

New Bouquet

Laura carried me to Harrison!  I got to watch Greta shoot some hoops in a jamboree.  Then we went to Alpena. Laura fixed her dad a fresh bouquet!  I’m feeling blessed today💐🏀

 

Pallets

Sister Helen made pallet quilts for each of my 6 grandchildren!  Our precious mother created quilts like this for infants.  Sister said she probably will not be around when I have great grands but she wanted them to have a quilt  like momma  made!  Of course, Astrid picked one with dogs on it.

The pallet could be put in the floor and little ones placed atop it.

 

Alteration

The old man is my nephew and the young man is his nephew.  So he’s my Great great nephew.  Old nephew wanted the young nephew to have some overalls like his.  He bought some for the boy at Walmart.  The right length would not go around the boy’s round body!

But old nephew knew his Aunt Helen was handy with a needle and sewing machine.  He dropped them off on her door knob as she was away when he came by.  They were size 16!  This little man is not school age yet.  Aunt Helen told old nephew to bring young nephew and she’d she what she could do. He brought the boy and Aunt Helen altered and hemmed and preformed a little magic.  Young nephew looks like old nephew and I think that was the plan.  Young nephew said, “I like all these pockets”!   

 

Basketball Started in 1891

My Greta likes basketball.  Erin, show her how the rules have changed!

 Dr. James Naismith invented basketball.  He had 13 rules.

Naismith’s Original 13 Rules of Basketball

1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands (never with the fist).

3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop.

4. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used for holding it.

5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way the person of an opponent shall be allowed; the first infringement of this rule by any player shall count as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game, no substitute allowed.

6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3,4, and such as described in Rule 5.

7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the mean time making a foul).

8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.

9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play by the person first touching it. In case of a dispute, the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds; if he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on that side.

10. The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.

11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made, and keep account of the goals with any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.

12. The time shall be two 15-minute halves, with five minutes’ rest between.

13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner. In case of a draw, the game may, by agreement of the captains, be continued until another goal is made.

Bass Reeves

There’s a new tv show about Deputy Bass Reeves.  I just finished the latest book by Sidney Thompson.  The stories are based on a true events.  Since Bass Reeves was a Deputy for Judge Parker his arrests are documented.  Bass’ son killed his wife.  Bass brought him in alive.  Most of the posters said “dead or alive”.  The best stories are true. My favorite Pope County Library has this book.
