Bushing Hogging Pays!

Bush hogging Galla Meadow leaves just the soft
green, lush grass....weeds are history.

Puzzle Board

Fleta gave me this board for Christmas in 1976. It has
all the birthdays of our family for 1977. 30 years ago,
I was going to be 27 years old. Helen 23, Patsy 39.
Laura was turning 3 that year, almost the age of little
Siggie. Time flies by and I am glad to be a keeper of
old things. Astrid needed a board to put a big puzzle
together with Pop. I dug this out and it was too small,
but I enjoyed looking at it and running my hand over
its old age smoothness. I will put it away again. Hopefully,
one of my girls will want it when I die. I think Fleta was
away in Alaska and she and George made it for me.

Computer Connection Problem!

My DSL is not working so I have connected
through my old dial up. I will not be posting
much til they fix it. A storm came through
Galla and then this happened ...no lightening
or anything.

Catch you later when all my equipment is
working.

Flying J

I live 2 and a half miles from a big Truck Stop..
Flying J. Mormon's own it. Big trucks are
everywhere...pulling out in front of you. But
we have the cheapest gas in the USA. It was
271.9 yesterday. When Bill was in office they
wanted to raise the price...he said he would
flood the market with reserves if they did.
Bush does not care. Helen needs to get another
motor cycle to ride. At least if gas goes out of
sight...she knows how. I will have to ride my
bicycle or walk.

Save a tree get rid of a Bush!!

Cheryl Ann's House!

When I went to Patsy's, I snapped this
photo of Cheryl's house near Green
Forest. The chicken house is in the
background and I think that is Son's
truck parked in the front.

The family is going on vacation out west!
I bet they have a great time.

Going to the Farm!

The big ball I put on this map is Powell Farm
where I grew up. Father bought it after WWII,
about 1946. George and Fleta and Clayton, too,
live there now.

If you look there are two little roads, one running
to the farm and then there is a gap. The gap is
Dry Creek. It is just a little Creek, but there is
no bridge across it. If I wanted to go to where
Grandpa Powell lived from the old Farm, I would
have to travel around the world to get there.

Patsy got there by crossing the Creek on a foot
log that Daddy cut to fall across the Dry Creek.
We are still locked in by nature, just as our
ancestors were. We forgot how fast a big
drought, storm, or floods can determine how
are lives are spent.

Computers can take pictures, but they can not
build bridges.

Hillary was in AR last evening. She said if she is
elected....WE WILL have health care.

Helping our Helpmates!

George told Fleta yesterday in a tired
voice that he really needed her to help
him with something...she said she would
try...
"convince the DR. that I need to go home".
Was what he needed. Today he is getting
his wish and will go home to the farm. It
will be a 3 and a half hour drive so I hope he
makes it okay.
Sister got here last night about 8:30 and left
this morn at 6:00 going back to Little Rock.
She was anxious to get back. She will let us
know when they get home.

Weeds or Flowers!

Once Larry's Uncle Cecil lived across the
road from us. He did not mow part of the
yard because he said it was full of flowers.
I think most of the folks going by where he
lived thought his flowers were weeds.

George is in Surgery!

Leaving in a little while to go to Little
Rock. Fleta called and they have taken
George back to surgery. It will take about
2 hours and then about the same in
recovery. Update tonight.

Simple Pleasures today!

Today I found pleasure in simple things. Like the birds
going south. Laura and Eric had an anniversery--8 years
together. The best part of their marriage is their three girls.
They both hold them precious as Pop and I do.

Erin and Greg were here early and spent the day with us.
Larry got a new Martin house for Galla Meadow and
homemade cookies that had peanuts and oatmeal and all
sorts of good stuff in them. Erin got him a jar of molasses.
He is an old fashioned guy and loves butter, molasses and
biscuits.

A good day does not have to be complicated. Simple things
enjoyed are the best!

School Today!

Habits are fast to change...when you aren't
trying to. In three weeks, I am already
staying in bed until 6:30, but today I must
get up and go to the University for a class.
I really am dreading staying there all day,
I would rather be here riding my bike to
the Meadow and sitting around reading.
But as Patsy says..."oh, well, as the world
turns"!

Green Forest Bank

This is where Patsy keeps all her money. This
was Daddy's Bank. If he bought something he
wrote a check and then called the bank and told
them...I wrote and check and will be in to sign a
note...if he forgot to call, they knew he'd be coming
in. His checks were just counter checks. When
he got old, he used printed checks but growing
up he just used counter checks. He always signed:
G. W. and not his name. He was a good father.

Old Bike, New Bike, Riding Partner!

My old bike needed new intertubes. Then Larry
said the tires were rotted. Then I needed new hand
grips. Then he found the back wheel was warped out
of shape. He was mad...said 'how in the world did this
happen'. Then I was mad and said probably because
I am fat...then I got a new bike!

My riding partner and I are having fun riding over
to Galla Meadow and down to Galla Lake by way of
Galla Road!

Barb's Special Box

Richard showed me this jewerly box
Cheryl Ann bought for her mother. The
pictures on top are neat. The one of Barb
and Richard is a back view and they
are sitting in his car.

Flag Day!

I think this is a picture Annie posted.
Today is flag day. Can you see the blood
tear stains on our dear old girl!

Rag Barn

Mom loved this little store at Alpena. It is
full of material that is affordable. I was tempted
to stop the day I went to Patsy's. Today I am
off to Harrison to spend the day with Erin...
birthday present to myself!

Patsy's Gifts

Patsy sent Erin this quilt. Oh, I do love it
and wish I could keep it, but ,on Wednesday,
I am going to Harrison and will take it to her.
Patsy has probably forgotten but she gave
Astrid some dresses. Astrid did not wear
them out and has passed them down to her
sister, Ingrid. She wore the dress Patsy gave
Astrid to church Sunday. Sigrid was just
posing.
Patsy says Fleta and George are in Little Rock
today checking to see if George will have to have
surgery on his shoulder. Hope all goes well.
Hope it is not too hot today in AZ. It is nice
here this morning!

Mile Corner

I think this is what Richard calls the mile
corner. I think it is one mile from Green
Forest. I took so many pictures on the way
to Chicken Ridge that my battery was down
on my camera when I got there and could
not take any. I took someof things he showed
me in his house. Like his quilts. I did not know
he loves quilts and bought them for Barb. He said
a guy that works at theGreen Forest Bank, Jimmy
Norris, made quilts and Richard bought quilts from
him. He has already bought Barb a quilt for the
50th weddingday in 2008. He is prepared. He
is the type to try to be prepared for what is going to
happen.

When you are going to Green Forest you will
notice at Alpena Pass you go to an higher
altitude then the area around Green Forest is
flat like a prairie or plateau. It is a very pretty
country. Mile corner was the site of many
deaths. But is has been strightened out as the
highway has been improved.

Alpena Pass, AR

I pass through Alpena on my way to Chicken Ridge.
All the stores are these old rock buildings. Carrollton,
AR was a large town until the Railroad missed it and
then Alpena passed it. The Coach of the Little Rock
(UALR) girls basketball team is from this small
town (Foley), as is his wife. Foley learned his transition
basketball style from his mentor who was from this
town also (John Widner).

New Chickens

Below you can see my little hen has adopted
the new chicks and is taking care of them. She
had been setting. On down is a photo of some
of my old chicks. Some of the old BBs are 10
years old. Patsy, you wanted to see in my pen.
You can see that there are cedar posts all
around the bottom and the wire is tied to the
posts. In the chicken house you can see my
roost and the hanging feeder. I am afraid my
little Rhode Island Red could be a rooster?

New Chicks today!

I am heading down Galla Road this morn
going up to Chicken Ridge...bye bye!

Bushing Hogging the Meadow

Larry is bushing hogging the Galla Meadow.
He thinks it will keep the deer out of the
garden. They like to sneak and if the field
is clean maybe they won't. The Meadow
looks good with the hair cut. He is not half
finished. Going around and around a big
field takes a while. The fence rows are clean
on two sides.

Our Potatoes

My red potatoes are looking good. We had
to replant our corn as the deer ate it. As
it came through the ground you could see
where a deer had eaten each piece walking
down the row to carefully get all my corn.
I call them deer rats.

Smart Sister is that!

Well, I did what smart Sis said and when
I click on log me in...my computer does it
which is easier than what I was doing before.

Here is her link to explain how to do this.
Blogging is rather annoying at times. If you
click out of IE then you are logged out and
have to go through the entire log in process
again. This does make it easier and I was
able to do it...and I am not smart Sister!

But still I wonder...will it still work tomorrow?

Are they too little?

This is what I was planning to put in the
back of my truck when I go get my babies
next week. But Patsy said she would have
to wrap chicken wire around it...so I have
a water heater box I found....

Patsy, can the chicks get out these holes.
Sure don't want to come up there and loose
my hatched chicks before we arrive home!
Ok, which one this or the box?

Needle in a Haystack

Finding something in here is like a needle
in a haystack...worse than Annie's attic!

Lost and Found!

Have you ever lost something and been really upset
about it. I lose things all the time. Mostly I put things
up and then forget where I put them. Well, in late
April I lost a treasured book. Erin bought it for me
for Christmas in 2005 (at my request). The book is
History of the Cherokees by Emmitt Starr. It is a
rare book and used copies sell for a lot at Amazon.

I searched and searched for the book in my messy
room knowing I lost it because I am a slouch! Not
there. I looked under the couch and chairs. Sometimes,
when I should be working and am sitting around
reading and company comes I will slip my book under
my chair. Not there.

I check out books from the University Library here.
I can get 4. I am an alumni or I couldnot get 4. I
checked out 4 books and at the end of April, I turned
in 4. The first week in May, I received a letter from
them telling me I still had one book, 25 cent a day
fine. Well, I called and told them they were sadly
mistaken. I returned my 4 books. Then there on
my reading shelf, appeared a little book by Timberlake
about the Cherokees. Oh, dear, I returned it to Tech
and apoligized for my oversight.

Then, I got to thinking, I returned 4 books. I bet I
gave them my treasured book. Now, this was a month
later! Oh, dear, do they throw the books away. I cried
a little and told Erin. She said promptly, 'Mom, it is
just a book'.

Well, I called Tech. A lady answered I knew and I told
her the story. She found my book and I got it back!
Lost things found are tresured even more. I looked in
the front of the book when I picked it up...it had
presented by Erin Jones to Mom Christmas 2005!
I promptly added my phone number to that
inscription.

The photo is a teeny, tiny, peek into the messy
room where I was afraid my book was buried!
I once wished Helen would come and clean my
room, but if she did she would throw all my
treasures in the trash!

Visit This Week!

Patsy, when I come up this week. I will be bringing
this book for Fleta. She is excited about reading about
those Atchison boys. You might get to read it first if I
leave it with you.

Red Headed Woman!

Have you seen that red headed woman
She's crazy over in yond holler.
Says her words are syrupy sweet
But they even tempt a lawyer!
If venture down her eerie lane
In evening past midnight
You'll see her through the window
Hunched over typing in the light!
Coming out from her painted lips
Is the red headed woman's snarl
"Can't wait 'til Chikken Ridge
Reads what I wrote tomorrow!"

Library Card!

Two days ago, Astrid came up with a book
from the library. She was all excited....she
had her OWN library card. She said they
let her have 7 books. I hope they let Ingrid
have her own card too. Yesterday, Astrid
told me that her mother took her back by
the Russellville Library as she had read all
7 of her books. I know Astrid is a 'Sister'.
She already loves reading.

Today is my last day of classes. I have to go
back next week on Tuesday and Wednesday
and then I am going on June 18. This has been
a good year. One teacher retired from my school.
Now I am the oldest hired hand--35 years!
