Before

First Larry cultivated all the gardens with the cub.  He has a scratcher look plow on the cub that is called a King cultivator.  Larry said a man named King made them for cubs.  International makes ones with a plow point.  But the King ones work better.

You can see my Kentucky Wonder Pole beans are running.  They need to be staked.

These are the pole beans.  After he cultivates the garden still needs to be hoed.  That is my job.  Hoeing gets stuff that is between the plants in the row.

I have a good stand of pumpkins.  Ingrid will be proud.  She loves pumpkin pie and will usually request that for her birthday cake.  I hope I can bring Patsy pumpkins and watermelons this fall.

Above is my pumpkins and below is the zucchini squash.

Below is my sweet potatoes--Georgia Jets.  I counted and I have 53 plants.  All look good.

Above is one of my problems.  I am going to take care of this with the hoe.  With that fabric Larry can not cultivate there.  I may lay another piece of fabric in between these two so I will not have hoe, hoe, hoe.
Larry in the corn patch.  The corn did not come up real uniformily because of the cool, cool early weather, but we are just happy to have what we do.  The 6 rows will make plenty.  Two of the rows are Candy Corn but I don't recall the other two types we planted.

Date

I have a date with a hoe.  The grass is really thick in my patch.  Larry is going to go through it with the cultivator but I will hoe between the plants.  Work calls.  Wearing my loose clothes so I am be comfy, Helen!

Dig For a Trigg

Still don't know how Dayle Trigg fits into this family!  She was a grade behind me.

Ok--this is Hearl Trigg--son of Jesse Trigg.  His wife is Donnie Stanphill's dad's sister!Donnie was in my grade.  So now I know that he was sort of kin to Randy Usery!  Rita and Hearl waer siblings.  Donnie and Randy are kin like Jonell Rudd and me.  Maybe I dreamed the Linda King connection!

Not A Modern Woman!

I am not a modern type person.  I don't see someone with a new hair do and want it.  I just want my hair not to lay on my head like a cap.  Larry's Mom could give me a perm and cut my hair so I looked descent.  She died in 1998 and since then I have found no one who could do jack squat with my hair.  Helen has good hair, but Patsy, Fleta and I have what I call kitten hair.  That is the way it feels.  I think mine is worse than theirs.  Our bad hair comes from Momma and mine is the same color as hers.  It used to be blond but now is the color of a mouse!

Well, I decided to try Wal Mart for a perm.  I could tell when the lady had it rolled up that she knew what she was doing.  The rollers sort of pull your scalp.  They are tight.  The paper covers the end of the hair to protect it.  Well, my hair is curled more like Ethel did it.  So I thought I would take a picture in the mirror like Helen does.  But I forget and put the camera in front of my face.  I can laugh at myself and did.  I took the next one with the camera down some.  Well, when I looked at the picture I thought--"oh, crap, Helen is going to see that nasty mirror so I cut it out of the photo, but decided to just show you how it looked, Helen so you could groan!

I have enough clothes to last the rest of my life.  I don't even want new stuff.  When you don't work all you need for winter is 3 pair of 'loose' jeans with elastic in the waist.  They need to be a size too big.  I wore out 3 pair last winter so I bought 3 new ones on sale.  I buy a 16!  I should probably wear 12, but I like loose and I want to dry them in the dryer without thinking they are tight afterward.

I have had this red striped shirt about 4 years.   It got a hole in it but I stitched it up with white thread.  I think it would be hard to be beautiful so the Lord blessed me with being plain.  Being plain makes it easy not to worry about what you look like too much!  When I pass, I want my girls to just pick something out of the closet to put on me.  I have funeral clothes, get award clothes, cheery clothes.  The only clothes I wear out are 'work' clothes!

I am going to Kroger to buy groceries for the week.   It is beautiful weather here.  My garden sure is growing.  Larry's corn is too!

Have a great day, Clayton...maybe he will skim to the bottom and read that!  I have a garden chair and will take a photo to show you!

Got My First Birthday Present

This was last June about this same time.  We skipped decoration this year as the road would have been a muddy mess.  But I may go later and put some flowers or just go.  I don't care about putting out flowers but I enjoy this decoration as lots of folks come and I can get genealogy info.

The light over my sink in 'this old house' has not worked in about a year and a half.  I told Larry that is what I wanted for my birthday--the light fixed.  He had to go get a new fixture and when he took the light down...it looked like a fire had occurred.  About a half cup of black suet fell out.  The wiring in this house has no grounds.  Anyhow he fixed it and it is the best present.  I don't see well and now I can see if I am cleaning my new potatoes or washing a pot in my sink.  I can also see how dirty the sink is.

Green Peas and New Potatoes

Here are my peas and potatoes before cooking and after.  I made what Momma called Johnny Cakes.  It was too hot to cook with the oven.  You know, I don't recall Momma ever saying it was too hot to cook supper when I was a kid!

Spud Put His Mark On Litter

Oops...sorry put this on the wrong blog!  Just going to leave it!
All the pups look like ol' Spud.  Photo with 3 pups are boys and one with 2 pups are the girls.  They are all very similar.  If one of the new owners of the males, wants to pick from a photo we can do that.  Dennis G. gets first pick, Rob Kendrick second and Jerry Dean gets the third male.  We get pick of the two females and Brian Spain gets the other little girl.

We are naming the pups after track events.  Our Astrid participated in track this year.  We loved the distance running.  Astrid ran the mile, the 800, the 4 by 800 relay!  She won mile run contest in the district meet running against older girls!  So we are naming our little girl, Amazin' Marathon--Astrid wants to run one someday!  The other female is Darlin' Dash!  The males are Spud's Spike, Bold Baton, and Sure Shot!

If....

If I lived near the home place, I would steal this tub and plant a flower in it!

My Only Rose

Wow, my rose is blooming.  After Larry built the flower bed around it, it really took off.  I wonder if it is just a wild rose on a domestic one?  Anyway, I think now it will grow and maybe it will even have more blooms next year.

Pea Picking

Tomorrow I am going to pick the green peas that are ready.  I sprayed the potatoes with seven and discovered some small potatoes I can dig and cook with my peas.   I will add a little cream.

Potatoes big enough to dig and scrape. Momma could do that so well.  I bet Patsy can do. I am horrible at cleaning them.  I recall we dug potatoes about the middle of July.  We were digging them the day Gilbert was born July 13th.  Down here they will be ready to dig at the end of this month.

The zucchini squash are growing, but I am having trouble with my yellow squash.  I have had 3 to die.  maybe a cut worn.  When the nights a cool, the cut worms at working.  Below is one of my cabbages.  I sprayed them with seven.  You can eat stuff sprayed with seven about 2 or 3 days afterward. It is a vegetable product.

Above is my okra and I have a good stand of it -- 2 rows.  Below my pumpkins are coming up.

Looking Forward!

Things to be thankful for about the past!  I can still visit the 'home place' where I was raised.  I can even stay overnight if I want.  I can still dial my Momma's number and someone will answer!  Well, maybe if he has added caller ID, he will just let it ring!

But I am looking forward!  I have not worked in a year and each month the checks come anyway.  The Lord is sending rain for the garden.  The chickens are laying eggs and this morning we had bacon, eggs, and toast.  (Did not want to heat the house with biscuit cooking).  Soon I will be a year older!  But hey, before long I will get the 'government insurance'.  Laura invited me to go to the trail with her and Astrid.  I walked two miles while Astrid ran over four and Laura over three.  But there we were 3 generations of strong women trying to stay that way!

I love my brothers and sisters and I am thankful for each of you.  Sorry brother had to quit the beer business!  But he can busy himself by sitting in that chair or plowing with that tiller I saw in the photo.  I love my family!  I am thankful Larry likes to garden and eat vegetables.  Proud that Erin and Laura put up with their parents and given us those great grand kids to make us want to live a little longer!
Did you notice those hills in the background of this photo?
Psalm 121
I will lift my eyes to the hills
From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.

Recital

Ingrid performed in her dance recital.  She had 3 numbers and all were great.  She is slender and tall and lovely!  I could not take a photo of her performance because of the total darkness. Wish you could have seen her!
