Hay for my Ridge Chicks
I wanted Patsy to see that I am taking
care of the Ridge Chickens. My pen gets
muddy and what I call marred. So I went
to the feed store and bought a bail of straw
to strew around in their pen. They were as
proud a I would be with a new rug in my
home!
The white Bantie is not a Ridge Chick. She is
one of my old ones that I have kept. Siggie
loves her and will eat all her egg because she
thinks the white chick laid it. When we gather
the egg and one had poo on it...I showed Siggie
and she yelled, 'Chickens don't poop on the eggs'.
Decoration Day 1950
Someone shared this photo with me this week.
It was taken first Sunday in June 1950. My
husband's father is the man with the white hat
and hands on his hips. His grandfather is the
one with overalls and hands on his hips. His
great grandmother is sitting on the ground near
her husband's grave with a rag tied on her head.
Larry looks like his grandfather.

Happy Birthday, Hillary
Hillary has a birthday today--Oct. 26. I
hope she will be such a great President that
we will get to stay home from work someday
because it is her birthday. I hope she will
remember the working people in our country.
I hope she will remember that she is not
queen...only president. I hope she will do
something about health care for all of us.
I hope the word WAR can move to a back
burner on the government stove!

A Friend indeed!
Yesterday on my walk, a friend went along.
It made the 30 minutes just whiz by and I
learned a lot of new stuff. Bats are good
because they eat misquitos. If you catch a
big frog by putting a bucket on top of it...
the entire bucket will jump around your
yard like it is alive. I wanted my friend to
come home with me...but her father said
'supper is ready'.

New Scanner
Well, when my computer crashed, I could not
get my all in one printer, scanner, etc. to load
and I know I could probably went to the hp site
and got the drivers, but I have been wanting a
scanner again. It is not as easy to find one now.
Walmart does not even carry them. They are
not expensive. They will scan documents and
let you save them a pdf files. They will scan
negatives. Oh, I wish Smartest, sweetest,
bestest sister lived closer because she would
figure out how to scan the negatives. I have a
big box of Larry's Mom's old negatives. Do you
think dumbest, sourest, sister can learn how to
scan an old negative. I doubt it for I could not
even get the scanner to work, but after a day
I realized...you have to turn it on!
The scanned picture is Hiway 7 going north
near McIlroy Gap just a few miles from Jasper.
The photo was snapped in the 1920s. Today
Arkansas 7 carries 1000s of tourist through the
Ozarks; however, in the 1920s it was but a narrow
dirt track, impassible after heavy rains. Granny's
father took 3 days to come to Russellville to get
supplies for the family. One day down the mountain,
one day in town where he slept at Henry's mule barn,
and one day back up to Ben Hur, AR. Even in 1949
when Larry was born, his mother came down the
mountain from Ben Hur 2 weeks before her due date
and boarded until June 16 when he came into the
world. Her Daddy came along and stayed with her
as she was only a girl without a husband.

New Reading Material for Patsy
Cliff Hollow
This big hole in the cliff had stairs built up to it so
I had go look at it. Can't figure out what the holes
were. They are really not caves. Daniel and Squire
Boone would only live at a camp a month or so and
then move on to a new site so they would not be
discovered by Indians. Daniel Boone's son James
was tortured and murdered by a group of Indians.
Daniel Boone was related by marriage to Abe Lincoln.
His parents were Friends (Quakers).

Cliff at Bona Dea
There a holes all in this cliff at Bona Dea Trail. I
am reading a book about Daniel Boone. He lived
in caves in Ky. while he hunted there. Once he
hunted over a year and when he and Squire were
heading home to the Yadkin to sell their work
they were robbed by Indians of all the furs, horses,
and guns--everything they had. How would it be
for us to work over a year and suddenly have nothing.
One of his children (Jemina) was fathered while he was
away many years. Guess he and Becky worked out this
problem for they stayed together until death. The story
is told she told him she thought he was dead and the child
was his brothers.
I am going to the libaray today to look for some books as
I don't have to work Friday and tomorrow. Larry is going
to the DR. tomorrow and I am playing co-captain.

Elephant Ears
of Laura and Eric's house and these pretty
Elephant Ears. They are really big. You can see
Astrid's little dog beside them to give you an
idea of how big they are. They are on the south
side of her house and she has been able to leave
them in the ground and they come back the next
year. I think they are so pretty.

Water is Life!
Then the one I took the other day on my walk and one
from back in the summer riding in the little 'Wren'. You can
see how we depend on the heavens to send water. I
always have conserved water for when the Sisters were
growing up we had to carry it in a bucket to our kitchen
from a spring in a cave one half mile away!
Water is life without it we would die in a few days. Don't
waste precious water. I never do. I could never water a
yard of grass. I can take a hose and give a plant or flower
a drink, but watering a lawn would grate at my backbone and
remind me of carrying all those buckets of water when
I was a girl!
I am glad I do not live in AZ like Baby Sister does. I
would not have a blade of grass to stand on!

What I saw on my Walk
I have been walking 30 minutes to an hour
a day since Sept. 22. I could not walk before
and had not been able to for 3 years. Anyway,
here are some things I saw on my way yesterday--
the shimmering lake in the sun and Bell off
barking at something up a big tree. I had to stop
and look at each a while so the 30 minute
walk took 50 minutes.

Above the Clouds
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, —
and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of —
wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Girl with Grit!
Pop turned two of his squirrel dogs out
yesterday as it was cooler. Opal treed a
squirrel and Pop shot it in the woods
in front of Siggie's house. Siggie started
yelling at Pop to come down the hill to
her house. He went down to see her
and she cried to hold the squirrel. Now,
this is not what most 2 year old girls
would do...but Sigrid has grit! Something
a hunter needs...brother Richard would
say. Laura is laughing on the porch because
Pop was trying to figure out why Siggie was
crying and it was because she wanted the
squirrel!

Thief in the Night!@
I love taking the photos I want from my kinfolk!
And I wonder, Patsy, what color is that head
wrap? Did someone make it for you? Did Clayton
and Richard ever let you wear Dad's Navy hat?
Is that picture taken on the Rock Quarry?
Richard said where I lived looked just like the
Rock Quarry...and I agreed. Rocks everywhere.

Pop has a new hunting friend!
Pop has a new hunting friend. Poor hunter
was without clothes for the sport so he went
to K Mart to find a hunting suit for his friend.
They are excited about frost coming and leaves
falling and going to the woods. She told Pop
she did not have a gun....and wanted one ....and
wanted it to be PINK...her favorite color!
When I snapped the photo the Hunter said:
"Gigi, I closed my eyes. You'll have to take
another one". So eyes were shut on purpose!
Question for Smart, Sweetest Sister...I called
Richard and visited on his birthday and he wants
to know if our cousin, Barbara Mote is dead or
alive. I told him you would know. Tell me and I
will relay the info to Richard.

Richard and his Friend
Story Teller's Birthday
Richard turns 68 today. He has told all
of us about the day we were born except
Patsy who is a year older than he. They
grew together and live only a mile or so
apart in their old age.
Last year, Richard came to see me. His
daughter Brenda brought him down the
valley to visit. I hope he has a great day
with all his children and grandchildren
around to listen to his stories. Who will
fill his shoes as the family story teller
someday....I doubt anyone could do the
job with such pizazz as Richard Charley!
