Carrying Water

Saw this at the Shiloh site and thought “how would you like to draw water from this well today and lug it to your cabin”.  James Lewis Slape was born in Carroll County AR.  Rosa is Rosa Belle Craig.  They are buried at Dog Branch Cemetery.  James’ father Thomas was a brother to Betsy Ann Slape who married Joseph Levi Harris, progenitors to the Harris family near Ben Hur.

If you have ever had to carry water, stroke a wood fire after toting in wood, and went out into the freezing cold to go to the bathroom, you can appreciate central heat, running, water and indoor plumbing so much more.  I’ve got my water dripping today.

Before we left small towns and countrysides behind, I lugged quite a bit of water, but it was from a rusty pump that needed to be primed before you could get any water.

Sometimes we just forget how primitive we had it in the past.
