Ada is learning to eat with a spoon, but she still has her fingers there just in case! Sister Helen bought Erin’s kids fruit. Nurses don’t much like you sending candy to children. Erin makes shortcake like Hazel Gaddy Powell. Momma made pie crust cut in small squares. She’d bake a big sheet of it. The strawberries were cut up but then smashed too. I recall she used her tater masher. The topping wasn’t cool whip, no, pure whipped cream. Crust, berries and repeat topped with whipped cream. We had wild strawberries in a patch down in the pasture. They were smaller, about like the raspberries you see in the store today. I’m sure we ate some as we picked. We carried a a small bucket full to the house and she’d make shortcake. Wild strawberries are even better than tame ones.
