My precious friend Mary gave Laura and I Foxglove plants last spring. Mine succumbed but Laura’s have thrived and are blooming. Maybe I can try again with a start from hers. Foxglove, also known as Digitalis, gets this name from the Latin digitus meaning finger. Leonhart Fuchs first invented the name for the plant in his 1542 book, based upon the German vernacular name Fingerhut, which translates literally as 'finger hat'. It actually means thimble to us today. The plant was once used in medicines. It’s very poisonous.
